  1. Insert a tape into the casette tape player.
  2. Briefly operate each tape player control.

Do all controls operate properly?

Does the radio briefly display CLN TAPE when a tape is inserted?

Using the test tape from the J 39916-A Audio System Kit, perform the motor speed test, following the instructions in the kit.

Is the tape speed within the allowable limits?

Play a tape in the player and determine if the output is garbled or distorted. The speaker test tones included in the J 39916-A test tape may be used to help identify a problem.

Is the output OK?

  1. Clean the tape using the tape cleaner included in the J 39916-A Audio System Kit.
  2. After cleaning, reset the tape clean meter by pressing the cassette eject control for five seconds.

Is the tape cleaning operation complete?

Replace the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement .

  1. Make sure any components removed during diagnosis are installed in place and that all connectors are connected.
  2. Repeat the system check. Refer to Radio/Audio System Check .
