J 42640 Steering Column Anti Rotation Pin

Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become uncentered which will cause damage to the coil assembly.

1. Lock the steering column by installing J 42640 into the underside of the steering column.



2. Disconnect the intermediate shaft lower coupling.
3. Remove the right transaxle mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement in Trasaxle.



4. Disconnect the pressure and return pipes (1 & 2) from the rack and pinion gear.
5. Disconnect the Magnasteer™ electrical connector.




Caution: The frame must be properly supported before partially lowering. The frame should not be lowered any further than needed to gain access to the steering gear.

6. Remove the rack and pinion attaching bolts.
7. Remove the rack and pinion assembly.

1. Install the rack and pinion assembly.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

2. Install rack and pinion bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 120 N·m (89 lb ft).

3. Connect the Magnasteer™ electrical connector.



4. Connect the pressure and return lines (1 & 2) to the steering gear.

Tighten
Tighten the pressure and return pipes to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).




5. Install the heat shield and bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the heat shield bolts to 10 N·m (7 lb ft).

6. Install the right transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement in Transaxle.
7. Lower the vehicle.



8. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering gear.
9. Tighten the intermediate shaft pinch bolt.

Tighten
Tighten the pinch bolt to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

10. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column.
11. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
