  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Block the wheels and apply the parking brake.
  3. Attempt to move the shift lever out of the PARK position.

Does the shift lever move out of the PARK position?

Go to Step 3

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal.
  3. Attempt to move the shift lever out of the PARK position.

Does the shift lever move out of the PARK position?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 4

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the stoplamp/automatic transmission shift lock control switch.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Attempt to shift the transmission out of Park.

Does the transmission shift out of Park?

--

Go to Step 6

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the shift interlock actuator.
  3. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the controlled positive voltage circuit of the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Important:: Inspect the stoplamp/automatic transmission shift lock control switch for proper adjustment. Refer to Stop Lamp Switch Adjustment in Hydraulic Brakes.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the stoplamp/automatic transmission shift lock control switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the short to voltage in the controlled positive voltage circuit of the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the stoplamp/automatic transmission shift lock control switch. Refer to Stop Lamp Switch Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes.

Replace the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator. Refer to Park Lock Cable Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T80-E.
