Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery (-) cable.
  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  3. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Console.
  4. Remove the two nuts (1) securing the steering column to instrument panel lower.
  5. Lower the steering column.

  7. Unsnap the steering column closeout.
  8. Remove the steering column closeout (1).

  9. Object Number: 283270  Size: SH
  10. Remove the two TORX® head screws (1) from the lower shroud cover.
  11. Remove the lower shroud.

  12. Object Number: 577284  Size: SH
  13. Remove the TORX® head screw from the upper column shroud.
  14. Remove upper shroud (1).

  15. Object Number: 575722  Size: SH
  16. Disconnect actuator switch connector from the steering column harness.
  17. Remove the tilt/telescope actuator switch (2) from the lower column shroud.

Installation Procedure

  1. Connect actuator switch connector to the steering column harness.
  2. Install the tilt/telescope actuator switch (2) to the lower column shroud.

  3. Object Number: 283271  Size: SH
  4. Install upper shroud and TORX® screw.
  5. Install lower shroud (1).

  6. Object Number: 283273  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Ensure that the tabs on the lower (1) shroud engage with the tabs on the upper shroud  (2) then snap them together.
  8. Install the 2 TORX® screws.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the two TORX® screws to 1.5 N·m (13 lb in).

  10. Install the steering column closeout shroud (1) .
  11. Install the steering column tilt lever.

  12. Object Number: 141933  Size: SH
  13. Raise the steering column into position.
  14. Install the two nuts (1) securing the steering wheel column to the lower instrument panel.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  16. If all service operations are completed enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
  17. Install the knee bolster. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Console.

  19. Install the negative battery cable.
