The radio is located in the center of the instrument panel. It provides all customer interface to the radio and cassette player or compact disc (CD) player functions. All radios incorporate electronic memory for the pre-selected stations function.
Backlighting is provided by incandescent bulbs controlled by an external dim knob on the instrument panel.
The vacuum fluorescent (VF) display indicates the time of day, radio frequency or CD track information.

The clock can also be updated by RDS data if the radio is tuned to an RDS broadcaster that send this information. Press the RDS SELECT button, followed by pressing and holding either the HR or the MN button. If the broadcaster is broadcasting the clock time data, the display should show STATION TIME IS __:__. The time will be what ever the broadcaster is sending. If the time is acceptable, simply continue to hold the HR or MN button until the display shows TIME UPDATED. If the broadcaster is not sending clock time data or the radio has not received the data, the display will show NO STATION TIME.
The time of day is maintained by a real time clock internal to the dash integration module (DIM). This time of day is broadcast as a Class 2 message over the serial data line. The radio receives this data and displays it on the front panel. Changing the time of day is accomplished through the hour and minute buttons on the front of the radio. These button presses are translated by the radio which then sends a Class 2 message to the DIM requesting a change in the time.

It scans each of the presets and stops for a few seconds at each station. The tuner continues scanning until you press scan again. PSCAN is displayed whenever the tuner is in PSCAN mode.

Press the LEVEL plus (+) symbol. AUTO VOLUME CONTROL ON appears on the display anytime you adjust the volume while AVC is on. The system has a feature called Radio Data System (RDS). RDS is only available on FM stations which broadcast RDS information. When RDS is on, the radio can:
• | Seek only stations with the types of programs you want to listen to |
• | Seek stations with traffic announcements |
• | Receive announcements about local and national emergencies |
• | Receive and display messages from radio stations |
• | Search for a stronger station when a station is too weak for listening |
The RDS SELECT button is located in the lower right hand corner of the radio face. Press this button to use the alternate RDS functions on the six preset buttons. RDS SELECT appears on the display.
With RDS off, press the RDS SELECT button, followed by this button to turn RDS on. The RDS display will turn on. If you are tuned to a station broadcasting RDS information, the station's call letters and Program Type (PTY) will replace the station's frequency on the display. After five seconds, the program type will be replaced on the display by the station's program type name. The program type and program type name may be the same or different. If the radio is tuned to a station that is not broadcasting RDS information, the station's frequency will remain on the display.
RDS permits broadcasters to send information to your radio that will allow the radio to automatically switch frequency to the best quality station in that broadcaster's network. Many larger networks of affiliated broadcasters have stations that break away from the main network programming at different times of the day to provide local programming. With the REGION feature on, the radio will switch to another network station only if that station is broadcasting main network programming. With the REGION feature off, the radio will switch to any network station that is affiliated with the currently tuned broadcast. The RDS button is used to access the region function. Press the RDS SELECT button, then press and hold the RDS (Preset 1) button for 2 seconds.
Press the RDS SELECT button, followed by this button to receive traffic announcements. RDS broadcasters may carry traffic information to inform you of current traffic conditions in your area. TP will appear on the display if the tuned station broadcasts traffic announcements. When this feature is turned on, TA will appear on the display if the radio is currently tuned to an RDS traffic station. If the radio is not currently tuned to an RDS traffic station, the radio will immediately seek an RDS traffic station. If the radio cannot find an RDS traffic station the radio will display NONE FOUND. If the broadcaster does send out a traffic announcement while you are listening to FM, a cassette tape or compact disc, TRAFFIC will be displayed on the radio, and the audio from the broadcaster will be heard. After the traffic announcement the radio will return to the previous playback mode. During the time that the radio displays TRAFFIC, you can adjust the volume of the traffic announcement. This will be the volume at which future traffic announcements will be heard.
When MSG appears on the radio display, a new text message is available for viewing. These messages are from the RDS broadcaster and may be general information such as artist and song title. To view the text message press the RDS SELECT button, followed by this button. If the whole message does not appear on the display, parts of the message will appear every three seconds until the message is completed. To view the message faster, press this button again. The MSG will disappear from the radio display until another new message is received.
The radio has the ability to use RDS data to find stations according to program type (PTY). When in PTY mode the preset buttons are now PTY presets instead of frequency presets. To turn PTY mode on or off, press the RDS SELECT button, followed by this button.
The preset 5 & 6 buttons can be used to scroll through the list of available program types (PTY) that can be used to find RDS broadcasts. Press the RDS SELECT button, followed by the preset 5 or 6 button to scroll through the available program types. The radio will show the PTY icon to indicate that it is in PTY mode. In this mode, the radio will now tune based on RDS data rather than frequency. When the desired PTY is shown on the display press the TUNE SEEK button. The radio will search for an RDS broadcaster that is carrying the PTY you selected. If the TA icon is displayed while performing a PTY search, the radio will look for an RDS broadcaster of both the selected PTY and traffic information. If the radio cannot find the desired PTY, the radio will display NONE FOUND and return to the station you were last listening to.
While in PTY mode, you can store the displayed PTY into the radio presets for fast and easy recall in the future. Press the RDS SELECT button, followed by the preset 5 or 6 button to scroll through the available program types. When the desired PTY is shown on the display, wait approximately 3 seconds until PRESET PTY: is displayed. Now press and hold the preset that you wish to store the PTY under.
Broadcasters may voluntarily choose to broadcast a special piece of RDS data called PTY-31. This is used in conjunction with the U.S. Emergency Alert System. This cannot be turned off and is used to notify the user of local or national emergencies. If an alert occurs the radio will display ALARM and the audio of the broadcaster will be heard, even if a cassette tape, or compact disc is playing. This will only be used during actual emergencies and not during tests of the emergency broadcast system. During tests of the system, TEST may be displayed in place of the normal PTY on the radio display.
