Did you perform the Instrument Cluster Diagnostic System Check?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Install a scan tool.
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Carefully test drive the vehicle.
  5. Observe the Engine Speed parameter in the powertrain control module (PCM) data display.

Does the scan tool indicate that the Engine Speed parameter is the same as the tachometer?

Test the tachometer signal for one of the following conditions:

    • An open
    • A short to ground
    • A short to voltage
    • A high resistance

Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the instrument cluster (IPC). Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the PCM. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the instrument cluster (IPC). Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .

Important: Program the replacement PCM.

Replace the PCM. Refer to Powertrain Control Module Replacement/Programming in Engine Controls - 4.6L.
