Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 42640 Steering
Column Lock Pin
- Install J 42640
into the steering column access hole
in order to lock the steering column. This will maintain the correct steering
orientation.
- Remove the knee bolster. Refer to
Knee Bolster Replacement
in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Console.
- Reposition the intermediate shaft seal to gain access to the upper
intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
- Remove the upper intermediate
shaft pinch nut.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the lower intermediate
shaft pinch bolt from the steering gear.
- Remove the intermediate steering shaft.
Installation Procedure
- Install the intermediate
steering shaft (1).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the lower
intermediate steering shaft pinch bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the pinch bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the pinch bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
- Install the knee bolster. Refer to
Knee Bolster Replacement
in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Console.
- Remove the J 42640
from the steering column.
