Water/Condensation in the Headlight Assembly - kw body electrical front head intermittent lamp light off on operation performance

Subject: Water/Condensation in the Headlight Assembly

Models:.

When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.

Condition/Concern:

Reports have been received of water and/or condensation in the headlight assemblies of 2004 XLRs. The water may be in the form of an actual puddle at the bottom of the assembly and condensation at the top of the lens after the light has been on for a period of time, or only the condensation. Depending on which circumstance you encounter, they are to be handled differently. The headlight assembly has a vent at the top of the lens only. During normal operation any condensation which has accumulated within the assembly will be boiled out of the headlight through this vent. This may take one to three hours of continuous operation to accomplish. This is considered to be characteristic of the design.

Recommendation/Instructions:

  1. Any water in the headlamp capsule that is in the form of a puddle or if the bottom of the headlamp is filled with water then replace the assembly.
  2. Any condensation that is in the headlamp that will dry up in a 1-3 hour period with the headlamps on and the engine running is considered normal and we are not to replace the headlamp assembly.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.
