Diagnostic Fault Information

Always perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.

Circuit/System Description

The fuel filler door release uses the fuel door release switch and the FUEL DOOR relay to active the fuel door release actuator. When the fuel door release switch is pressed, ground is applied to the coil side of the FUEL DOOR relay. With the relay coil energized, the switch portion if the relay is closed. This applies 12 volts to the fuel door release actuator, opening the fuel filler door.

Circuit/System Verification

Ignition ON, use fuel door release switch to command the fuel door release actuator and listen/feel for the operation of the FUEL DOOR relay.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the FUEL DOOR relay.
  2. Ignition ON, verify the fuel door release actuator is deactivated.
  3. If the fuel door release actuator is still activated, repair the relay switch control circuit for a short to voltage.
  4. Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the relay coil voltage supply circuit and ground.
  5. If the test lamp does not illuminate, repair the relay coil voltage supply circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the voltage supply circuit breaker is open, test the voltage supply circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the FUEL DOOR relay.
  6. Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the relay switch voltage supply circuit and ground.
  7. If the test lamp does not illuminate, repair the relay switch voltage supply circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the relay switch voltage supply circuit fuse is open, test the relay switch control circuit for a short to ground.
  8. Disconnect the harness connector at the fuel door release actuator.
  9. Test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the fuel door release actuator ground circuit and ground.
  10. If greater than 1 ohm, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  11. Connect the harness connector at the fuel door release actuator.
  12. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the relay switch voltage supply circuit and the relay switch control circuit. Verify the fuel door release actuator is activated.
  13. If the fuel door release actuator is not activated, test the relay switch control circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the fuel door release actuator.
  14. Connect a test lamp between the relay coil control circuit and the relay coil voltage supply circuit.
  15. Press and release the fuel door release switch. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF with each press and release of the switch.
  16. If the test lamp remains ON all the time, test for a short to ground on the relay coil control circuit. If the circuit tests normal, replace the fuel door release switch.
If the test lamp remains OFF all the time, test for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance on the relay coil control circuit. If the circuit tests normal, replace the fuel door release switch.
  17. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the FUEL DOOR relay.

Component Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the FUEL DOOR relay.
  2. Test for 70-100 ohms of resistance between terminals 85 and 86.
  3. If the resistance is not within the specified range, replace the relay.
  4. Test for infinite resistance between the following terminals:
  5. • 30 and 86
    • 30 and 87
    • 30 and 85
    • 85 and 87
If less than infinite, replace the relay.
  6. Install a 20-amp fused jumper wire between relay terminal 85 and 12 volts. Install a jumper wire between relay terminal 86 and ground. Test for less than 2 ohms of resistance between terminals 30 and 87.
  7. If greater than 2 ohms, replace the relay.
