Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
Important: If you replace the drive chain, also replace the drive sprockets and
the driven sprockets.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the bolts which secure the torque converter to the flywheel.
Hold the crankshaft balancer with the J 38122-A
.
- Remove the engine/transmission assembly from the vehicle. Refer
to
Engine Replacement
.
- Support the engine with chains and a suitable hoist.
- Remove the starter motor. Refer to
Starter Motor Replacement
in
Engine Electrical.
- Remove the transmission selector cable.
- Remove the brace which supports the transmission (3)
to the engine (1).
- Remove the transmission from the engine. Refer to
Transmission Replacement
in Automatic Transaxle 4T40 - E/4T45 - E.
- Remove the flywheel. Refer to
Engine Flywheel Replacement
.
- Clean the flywheel bolt threads and crankshaft threads with a
nylon bristle brush.
- Remove the crankshaft balancer pulley. Use the J 38122-A
and the J 24420-C
.
- Attach the engine stand fixture to the engine. Install the engine
on the stand.
- Remove the crankshaft balancer pulley. Refer to
Crankshaft Balancer Replacement

- Remove the ignition coil and the module assembly.
- Remove the spark plugs. Refer to
Spark Plug Replacement
in Engine Electrical.
- Remove the engine front cover. Refer to
Engine Front Cover Replacement
.
- Rotate the engine to the timed position and remove the timing
chain. Refer to
Camshaft Timing Chain, Sprocket, and Tensioner Replacement
.
- Remove the timing chain housing. Refer to
Timing Chain Housing Replacement
.
- Rotate the engine on the engine stand 180 degrees in order
to access the oil pan.
- Remove the oil pan and the gasket. Refer to
Oil Pan Replacement
.
- Remove the balance shaft assembly.
- Remove the crankshaft. Refer to
Crankshaft and Bearing Removal
.
- Remove the balance shaft drive chain.
Installation Procedure
- Install the balance shaft drive chain.
- Install the crankshaft. Refer to
Crankshaft and Bearing Removal
.
- Install the balance shaft assembly.
- Time the balance shaft. Refer to
Balance Shaft to Engine Timing
.
- Install the oil pan gasket and the oil pan. Refer to
Oil Pan Replacement
.
- Rotate the engine 180 degrees on
the stand in order to install the timing chain housing and the other components.
- Install the timing chain. Refer to
Camshaft Timing Chain, Sprocket, and Tensioner Replacement
.
- Install the timing chain housing. Refer to
Timing Chain Housing Replacement
.
- Install the front timing chain cover. Refer to
Engine Front Cover Replacement
.
- Install the upper engine mount bracket.
- Install the spark plugs. Refer to
Spark Plug Replacement
in Engine Electrical.
- Install the ignition coil and the module assembly.
- Connect the engine to the chain hoist and remove the engine stand
fixture from the engine block.
- Install the crankshaft balancer pulley. Refer to
Crankshaft Balancer Replacement
.
- Install the flywheel to the engine. Refer to
Engine Flywheel Replacement
.
- Connect the transmission to the engine. Refer to
Transmission Replacement
in Automatic Transaxle 4T40 - E/4T45 - E.
