Important: A short to ground will cause a open fuse(s). Before performing this diagnostic procedure, inspect the fuse(s) for an open.

  1. Ensure that the gear selector is in PARK.
  2. Measure voltage between the Starter Solenoid terminal S and the battery negative terminal with a DMM.
  3. Hold the Ignition Switch in the START position.

Is voltage measured within the specified range?

B+

Go to Step 2

  1. Measure voltage between the Starter Solenoid terminal S and Ground the terminal with a DMM.
  2. Hold the Ignition Switch in the START position.

Is voltage measured within the specified range?

B+

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 5

  1. Disconnect the Park Neutral Position Switch connector C1.
  2. Measure voltage between terminal G of the Park Neutral Position Switch connector C1 and the ground with a DMM.
  3. Hold the Ignition Switch in the START position.

Is voltage measured within the specified range?

B+

Go to Step 6

Go to Step 7

Replace the Starter. Refer to Starter Replacement in Cranking Systems.

Clean Starter Motor and Starter Motor mounting bolts to create a good ground to the engine block.

Measure resistance between terminal E and terminal G of the Park Neutral Position Switch with a DMM.

Is resistance measured within the specified range?

0-2 ohms

Go to Step 8

  1. Backprobe the Underhood Bussed Electrical Center (U/H BEC) with a DMM
  2. Measure voltage between terminal F11 of connector C3 and ground.
  3. Hold the Ignition Switch in the START position.

Is voltage measured within the specified range?

B+

Go to Step  10

Go to Step 11

Repair the open in circuit 6 between the Park Neutral Position Switch and the Starter Solenoid. Refer to Wiring Repair in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

Check the adjustment of the Park Neutral Position Switch. If OK, replace the Park Neutral Position Switch. Refer to Transaxle Range Switch in Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.

  1. Backprobe the Underhood Bussed Electrical Center (U/H BEC) with DMM
  2. Measure voltage between terminal A11 of connector C1 and ground.
  3. Hold the Ignition Switch in the START position.

Is voltage measured within the specified range?

B+

Go to Step 12

  1. Backprobe the Ignition Switch with a DMM and
  2. measure voltage between terminal A of connector C2 and ground.

Is voltage measured within the specified range?

B+

Go to Step 13

Repair the open in circuit 5 between the Underhood Bussed Electrical Center (U/H BEC). Refer to Wiring Repair in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Backprobe the Ignition Switch with a DMM and
  2. measure voltage between terminal B of connector C1 and ground.
  3. Hold the Ignition Switch in the START position.

Is voltage measured within the specified range?

B+

Go to Step 15

  1. Backprobe the Underhood Bussed Electrical Center (U/H BEC) with a DMM.
  2. measure voltage between terminal A of connector C4 and ground.

Is voltage measured within the specified range?

B+

Go to Step 17

Repair the open in circuit 5 between the Ignition Switch and the Underhood Bussed Electrical Center (U/H BEC). Refer to Wiring Repair in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

Replace the Ignition Switch. Refer to Ignition Switch in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

Repair the open in circuit 842 between the Ignition Switch and the Underhood Bussed Electrical Center (U/H BEC). Refer to Wiring Repair in Wiring Systems.
