Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 21177-A Drum to Brake Shoe Clearance Gage

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the brake drums. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
  4. Verify that the stops on both of the parking brake levers are against the edges of the webs on the park brake shoes.
  5. Use a J 21177-A in order to measure the drum inside diameter.
  6. Adjust the turning star wheel on the adjusting screw. Adjust the shoe and lining diameter to 1.27 mm (0.05 in) less than the inside diameter of the drum at each wheel.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the brake drums. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
  2. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Apply and release the brake pedal 30 to 35 times with a 1 second pause between each brake application.
  4. Inspect for brake drag and improper parking brake function.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
