If a vehicle needs service to the theft deterrent system, which results in the replacement of the PASSLOCK™ Sensor or Body Control Module (BCM), the PASSLOCK™ password must be re-learned by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

Important: Do NOT replace the PCM.

Reprogramming of the PCM is the correct procedure to re-learn the PASSLOCK™ password. Beginning with SI 2000 TIS update #17 mailed September 19, 2000, the PCM may be reprogrammed. PCM reprogramming is to be accomplished using standard Service Programing System (SPS), the Tech 2 and the Techline PC.

Use the following procedure to perform the vehicle theft learn:

  1. Connect the Tech 2 to the vehicle Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC).
  2. Select SPS.
  3. Select REQUEST INFORMATION.
  4. Disconnect the Tech 2 from the vehicle and connect it to the Techline terminal.
  5. On the Techline terminal, select the following:
  6. • TIS 2000
    • SPS
    • PROGRAMMING
  7. Enter the VIN and select VTD.
  8. At the VTD Learn screen, select THEFT DETERRENT LEARN FOR INITIAL RELEASE THEFT SYSTEM.
  9. Select one of the following:
  10. • #16004019 for vehicles with a 4-cylinder engine
    • #16004020 for vehicles with a 6-cylinder engine
  11. Select DOWNLOAD TO THE TECH 2.
  12. Disconnect the Tech 2 from the Techline Terminal and reconnect the Tech 2 to the vehicle.
  13. Perform the Vehicle Theft Re-learn procedure.
  14. Verify that the system works by starting the vehicle and checking for warning lights or trouble codes.

Warranty Information

The warranty claim should be for the repair performed, plus an additional time allowance of 0.5 hr to reprogram the PCM.
