General Motors has determined that certain 1993 M/L and G Vans equipped with cruise control (RPO K34) may experience a condition at temperatures below 320 Fahrenheit, where the transmission will not shift out of "PARK" with the brake pedal depressed.
To prevent this condition from occurring, dealers are to replace the cruise control vacuum release valve, and check and adjust the BTSI solenoid cable as needed.
Involved are certain 1993 M/L and G Vans equipped with cruise control (RPO K34) and built within the following VIN breakpoints:
PLANT YEAR MODEL PLANT CODE FROM THROUGH -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1993 M/L Van Baltimore "B" PB100001 PB225275 1993 G Van Flint "F" PF300008 PF362809 1993 G Van Scarborough "4" P4100002 P4152033
Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Computer listings contain the complete Vehicle Identification Number, owner name and address data, and are furnished to involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign.
These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin has no involved vehicles currently assigned.
Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by Chevrolet Motor Division (see copy of owner letter included with this bulletin).
All unsold new vehicles in dealers' possession and subject to this campaign must be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this campaign bulletin before owners take possession of these vehicles.
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.
Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory with no owner information indicated on the dealer listing, are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required correction according to the instructions contained in this bulletin. This could be done by mailing to such owners a copy of the owners letter accompanying this bulletin. Campaign follow-up cards should not be used for this purpose, since the owner may not as yet have received the notification letter.
In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign enters your vehicle inventory, or is in your dealership for service in the future, please take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.
25% of parts required for this campaign will be preshipped to involved dealers of record. This preshipment will occur the week of November 21, 1994. Parts received for recently transferred vehicles should be forwarded by the original dealer (with an accompanying phone call) to the dealer that received the transferred vehicle.
Additional parts required to complete this campaign are to be obtained from General Motors Service Parts Operations (GMSPO) . To ensure these parts will be obtained as soon as possible, they should be ordered from GMSPO on a "C.I.O." order with no special instruction code, but on an advise code (2).

Dear Chevrolet Van Owner:
As a valued customer, your complete satisfaction with your Chevrolet van is our goal. In keeping with this goal, we want to let you know that we have discovered a problem that could affect your vehicle and we want to take care of it at no charge to you.
General Motors has determined that certain Astro and Chevy vans may experience a condition at temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, where the transmission will not shift out of "PARK" with the brake pedal depressed. The Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) system prevents the automatic transmission from being shifted out of "PARK" unless the brake pedal is depressed.
To prevent this condition from occurring, your dealer will replace the cruise control vacuum release valve, and check and adjust the BTSI solenoid cable as needed. This service will be performed for you at no charge.
Please contact your Chevrolet dealer as soon as possible to arrange a service date and so the dealer may order the necessary parts for the repair. Instructions for performing this service have been sent to your dealer and parts are available. Please contact your dealer to arrange a service date as soon as possible. This procedure will take approximately 1 hour to complete. You may ask your dealer if you wish to know how much additional time will be needed to schedule and process your vehicle.
If you experience this condition prior to having the repair performed, please use the following procedure to by-pass the BTSI condition:
Review positions in ignition switch. Refer to your 1993 Owners Manual (Astro Van Owners Manual, pages 2-13 and 2-14; Chevy Van Owners Manual, pages 2-18 and 2-26).
1. Start engine.
2. Turn key to "OFF" (one click forward from "Lock" position).
3. Engage park brake and shift to neutral.
4. Start engine.
5. Release park brake and shift to desired gear.
The enclosed owner reply card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist in making the necessary correction in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage paid reply card and returning it to us.
We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
