For 1990-2009 cars only
  1. Turn OFF the engine.
  2. Wipe dry the complete power steering system, which includes the following components:
  3. • The gear
    • The pump
    • The hoses
    • The connections
  4. Measure the oil level in the pump reservoir. Adjust the oil level as directed.
  5. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid .

  6. Start the engine.
  7. Important: Do not hold the wheel against the stops or damage to the pump may occur.

  8. Turn the steering wheel from stop to stop several times.

  9. Object Number: 244892  Size: MH
  10. Inspect the following areas for leaks:
  11. • The return tube fitting
         1. Tighten the hose clamp if the hose clamp is loose.
         2. Replace the fitting if the fitting is deformed.
         3. Apply Loctite® 75559 solvent or an equivalent and Loctite® 290 adhesive or an equivalent to the tube-housing connection.

    Follow the manufacturer's directions.

    • The pressure hose fitting

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

         1. Tighten the fitting to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).
         2. Replace the seal if the leakage continues.
    • The ball seat.
         1. Seat the ball in the housing with a blunt punch.
         2. Apply Loctite® 75559 solvent or an equivalent and Loctite® 290 adhesive or an equivalent to the area.

    Follow the manufacturers directions.

    • The drive shaft seal.
         1. Replace the drive shaft seal.
         2. Ensure that the drive shaft seal is clean.
         3. Ensure that the seal area is not pitted.
    • The housing plug seal.
         1. Seat the plug in the housing.
         2. Apply Loctite® 75559 solvent or an equivalent and Loctite® 290 adhesive or an equivalent to the plug-housing area.

    Follow the manufacturer's directions.

    • The housing seal.
    • Replace the housing seal.
    • The side cover (1).
         1. Tighten the side cover bolts to 60 N·m(45 lb in).
         2. Replace the side cover seal if the leakage continues.
    • The adjuster plug seal (3).
    • Replace the adjuster plug seals.
    • The pressure line fitting (2).
         1. Tighten the hose fitting nut to 28 N·m (21 lb in).
         2. Replace the seal if the leakage continues.
    • The pitman shaft seals (4).
    • Replace the pitman shaft seals.
    • The top cover seal (5).
    • Replace the top cover seal.
