Disassembly Procedure


    Object Number: 609528  Size: SH
  1. Remove the stub shaft housing. Refer to Steering Gear Stub Shaft Seal and Bearing Replacement - Off Vehicle .
  2. Remove the pitman arm nut (4) from the steering gear (1).
  3. Remove the lock washer (3) from the steering gear (1).
  4. Remove the pitman arm assembly (2) from the steering gear (1).

  5. Object Number: 412386  Size: SH

    Important: The pitman shaft will not clear the housing if it is not centered.

  6. Clean the exposed end of the pitman shaft and housing with a wire brush.
  7. To center the stub shaft:
  8. 6.1. Rotate the stub shaft (1) with a wrench from stop to stop.
    6.2. Count the number of turns.
    6.3. Rotate the stub shaft back ½ of the total amount of turns.

  9. Remove the pitman shaft cover bolts (1) from the pitman shaft and cover assembly (2).
  10. Remove the lash adjuster nut (3) from the pitman shaft and cover assembly (2).

  11. Remove the pitman shaft and cover assembly (2).

Assembly Procedure

  1. Install the new pitman shaft cover O-ring (4).
  2. Install the pitman shaft and cover assembly (2) onto the steering gear housing assembly.
  3. Install the lash adjuster nut (3) onto the pitman shaft and cover assembly (2)
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the pitman shaft cover bolts (1) onto the pitman shaft and cover assembly (2).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the pitman shaft cover bolts to 57 N·m (42 lb ft).

  7. Install the pitman arm assembly (2) onto the steering gear (1).
  8. Install the lock washer (3) onto the steering gear (1).
  9. Install the pitman arm nut (4) onto the steering gear (1).
  10. Install the stub shaft housing. Refer to Steering Gear Stub Shaft Seal and Bearing Replacement - Off Vehicle .
