Inspect the steering fluid at regular intervals. Add fluid when required. Refer to Fluid Capacities and Recommended Fluids and Lubricants in Maintenance and Lubrication.

Flush the system if dirt is in the system. Refer to Power Steering System Flushing . If the system is exceptionally dirty, disassemble the pump and the gear.

Inspect the following components for leakage at regular intervals:

    • The tubes
    • The hoses
    • The fittings

Ensure that the fittings are tight. Ensure that the following components are in place and properly secured:

    • The clips
    • The clamps
    • The supporting tubes
    • The hoses

Inspect the hoses with the wheels in the straight-ahead position. Then inspect the wheels when the wheels are turned fully to the left and the right. Observe the movement of the hoses. Correct any hose that makes contact with other parts of the vehicle and could cause chafing or wear.

Ensure that the hoses are not twisted, kinked or tightly bent. Ensure that the hoses have sufficient natural curvature in the routing in order to absorb movement and hose shortening during vehicle operation.

Air in the system causes spongy action and noisy operation. Bleed the system after you refill the system when a hose is disconnected or fluid is lost for any reason. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
