Diagnostic Aids

You cannot properly service a clutch until you know what is wrong with it. If a bearing noise occurs you will need to check the bearing in the actuator cylinder. You will also need to check the release bearing for burrs, nicks, or even relubricate the release bearing. Also you should check for tension between the clutch fork spring and the ball stud.

  3. This step test for tension between the clutch fork and the ball stud.

DEFINITION: The clutch release bearing is noisy with the clutch fully engaged or during engagement.

Did you review the clutch symptom operations and perform the necessary inspections?

Inspect the release bearing in the actuator cylinder.

Is the release bearing worn?

Go to Step 3

Replace the release bearing in the concentric slave cylinder. Refer to Clutch Concentric Actuator Cylinder Replacement .

Is the clutch release bearing still noisy?

Go to Step 4

Check the clutch release bearing or binding on the transmission bearing retainer.

Is the release bearing binding on the transmission bearing retainer?

Go to Step 5

System OK

Clean and relubricate, check for burrs, nicks, etc. the affected area.

Is the release bearing still binding?

Go to Step 6

Test for insufficient tension between the clutch fork spring and the ball stud.

Is the tension correct?

Replace the clutch fork. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement .

Did you correct the condition?

Check for weak linkage return spring.

Is the return spring weak?

Replace the return spring. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement .
