PARKING BRAKE HANDLE RATTLE REPAIR PROCEDURE

Some 1982 Cavaliers may exhibit a rattling noise in the parking brake handle due to the release rod and pawl being loose when the lever assembly is in the "off" position.

Vehicles exhibiting this condition can be corrected following the procedure below:

1. Obtain a piece of polyurethane foam 1 inch thick and 1 inch in diameter.

2. Compress and insert in park brake handle so the foam presses against pawl and release rod as illustrated below.

3. Check to make sure release rod action is not impaired and the lever assembly locks properly in "on" position

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
