To correct a 1982 Cavalier headlining assembly that is sagging across the windshield opening, proceed as follows:
(1) Remove right and left sunshade assemblies.
(2) Rotate rearview mirror downward to lowest position.
(3) Remove all headlining plastic fasteners from metal clips across windshield opening and discard (Figure 1).
(4) Clean windshield header and corresponding underside of headlining of any residue or dirt using a solvent type cleaner.
(5) Cut an 18" strip of hook (P/N 20380765) and loop (P/N 20380766) fastener material and join together. Remove protective paper from both sides of hook and loop fastener material.
(6) Position hook and loop fastener along windshield header as shown in Figure 2.
(7) Firmly press headlining against adhesive until headlining is securely bonded.
(8) To separate headlining from roof panel after adhesive is bonded to headlining, use a headlining inserting tool (J-2772) and proceed as follows:
a. Starting at one end of hook and loop material, insert tool between hook and loop and carefully separate hook portion from loop portion of material.
b. Continue working tool along entire length of hook and loop material until headlining is loose from windshield header.
(9) If necessary, a 40" strip of "Windo-Weld" butyl tape (3M #08610), or equivalent, may be substituted for the hook and loop fastener material.
The above procedure (steps 3 through 9) may also be used to repair a sagging headlining assembly across the back window opening.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
