DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR HITTING DOOR INNER PANEL

A condition may occur on some early production 1982 Cavalier four (4) door styles (35-69) built prior to October 30, 1981, where the front doors will not lock when the power lock switch is used. This condition is caused by the top of the lock actuator hitting the door inner panel as the lock actuator is activated.

In order to determine if this condition exists, actuate power lock switch. Operate door outside handle, if door open follow procedure below.

To correct this condition:

(1) Remove door trim panels on right and left front doors as described in Section 5 of the Body Service Section (see 1982 Cavalier Shop Manual).

(2) Pull back water deflector from rear upper corner of door far enough to gain access to lock actuator. Using a pocket knife or other sharp bladed tool cut off top of rubber bumper as shown in Figure 1. Check operation of lock actuator by locking and unlocking door with the switch five (5) times. Repeat operation on opposite front door.

(3) Replace all previously removed trim.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
