Some 1985-1987 Cavaliers may experience erratic A/C compressor operation. This condition may be caused by a corroded power steering pressure switch. To diagnose this condition, disconnect the power steering pressure switch and jump across the connector terminals while the compressor is operating erratically. If the compressor stops cycling erratically, replace the power steering pressure switch, P/N 10041728. Should the compressor continue to cycle erratically, refer to the appropriate Service Manual diagnostic charts for A/C clutch control in Section 6E2 for L-4 engine equipped vehicles or Section 6E3 for V-6 equipped vehicles.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
