Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement 2.2L

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 39500-B A/C Refrigerant Recovery, Recharging, and Recycling Station

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the drive belt.
  3. Recover the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  5. Remove the engine splash shield. Refer to Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.

  6. Object Number: 292752  Size: MH
  7. Remove the compressor hose assembly. Discard the sealing washers.
  8. Plug or tape the compressor/condenser hose end in order to prevent moisture contamination.
  9. Disconnect the clutch electrical connector from the compressor (4).
  10. Remove the compressor bolts (1,2,3,5).
  11. Important: If you replace the compressor (4), refer to Refrigerant Oil Distribution .

  12. Remove the compressor (4) from the engine assembly (6).

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 292752  Size: MH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the compressor (4) with the mounting bolts (1,2,3,5).
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  3. Connect the electrical connector.
  4. Install the compressor hose assembly using the new sealing washers.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  6. Install the engine splash shield. Refer to Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Install the drive belt.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

  11. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  12. Perform a leak test. Refer to Leak Testing .
  13. Test the system operation.

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the drive belt.
  3. Recover the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  5. Remove the engine splash shield. Refer to Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.

  7. Remove the compressor hose assembly. Discard the sealing washers.

  12. Remove the compressor (4) from the engine assembly (6).

  2. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  3. Connect the electrical connector.
  4. Install the compressor hose assembly using the new sealing washers.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  6. Install the engine splash shield. Refer to Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Install the drive belt.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

  11. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  12. Perform a leak test. Refer to Leak Testing .
  13. Test the system operation.
