Radio Assemblies

GM radios may have the following features:

    • ETR Tuning
    • Vacuum fluorescent display
    • AM/FM stereo
    • Seek and scan tuning
    • Digital clock display

The following radio assemblies are available for Chevrolet models:

UM7: AM/FM stereo, seek/scan, clock.

UM6: AM/FM stereo, seek/scan, clock, auto reverse cassette.

UL0: AM/FM stereo, seek/scan, clock, auto reverse/music search cassette, auto tone, SCV.

UN0: AM/FM stereo, seek/scan, clock, compact disc, auto tone, SCV.

The following radio assemblies are available for Pontiac models:

UM7: AM/FM stereo, seek/scan, clock

UM6: AM/FM stereo, seek/scan, clock, auto reverse cassette

UT6: AM/FM stereo, seek/scan, clock, auto reverse cassette, equalizer

UP3: AM/FM stereo, seek/scan, clock, compact disc, equalizer

FM Stereo

All factory-equipped sound systems with an FM stereo radio perform the following functions when an FM stereo broadcast is received:

    • The receiver switches to stereo operation.
    • The indicator in the dial illuminates.

Stereo operation occurs when the radio separates a stereo broadcast back into the following 2 channels:

    • Left
    • Right

Stereo sound is noticeably more realistic to the ear. Although FM is normally free from static, the following conditions may limit reception:

    • The terrain
    • The atmospheric conditions
    • The strength of the station
    • The distance of the vehicle from the transmitter

Buildings or other obstructions may cause any of the following conditions:

    • Momentary static
    • Flutter
    • Station swapping

If the reception is poor, tune to a stronger station.

Radio Assembly Controls

When the radio is turned on the following events occurs:

  1. The frequency appears on the display for 5 seconds.
  2. The time appears on the display.

In order to recall the frequency push the RECALL button while the radio is turned on. Pushing the RECALL button causes the frequency to appear on the display for 5 seconds.

When the ignition lock cylinder is in the LOCK or OFF position, the radio display is blank. In order to display the time when the ignition lock cylinder is in the OFF or the LOCK position, perform one of the following actions:

    • Push the upper knob
    • Push the RECALL button

The time displays for 5 seconds. Then the display becomes blank.

Radio Fixed Antenna Assembly

GM engineers designed the fixed antenna assembly in order to provide good radio omni-directional reception in moderate fringe areas.
