Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 24402-A Glass Sealant Remover
    • J 39032 Stationary Glass Removal Tool
    • J 36863 Glass Removal Kit

The quarter window is made of a solid tempered safety glass encapsulated by the reveal molding. Urethane adhesive is used to secure the window module to the body opening. Service the following components as an assembly:

    • The quarter window
    • The reveal molding

Secure the quarter window applique to the quarter window using the locking tabs. Use a urethane adhesive in order to secure the quarter window applique to the body opening.

    Caution: When replacing stationary windows, use Urethane Adhesive Kit GM P/N 12346392 (Canadian P/N 10952983), or a urethane adhesive system meeting GM Specification GM3651G, to maintain original installation integrity. Failure to use the urethane adhesive kit will result in poor retention of the window which may allow unrestrained occupants to be ejected from the vehicle resulting in personal injury.

  1. Remove the rear quarter trim panel. Rear Quarter Trim Panel Replacement in Interior Trim.
  2. Mask off the area around the window in order to protect the painted surfaces.
  3. Remove the quarter window applique.
  4. From the inside of the vehicle, cut around the entire perimeter of the quarter window using one of the following tools:
  5. • The J 24402-A
    • The J 39032
    • Keep the blade of the tool as close to the body pinchweld flange as possible in order to prevent damage to the quarter window reveal molding.
  6. Remove the quarter window.
  7. Clean the quarter window channel where the urethane is applied with a clean dry cloth.
  8. Clean the surfaces to which the urethane adhesive is to be applied with a clean dry cloth:
  9. • The applique
    • The body

    Important: 

       • Refinish the pinchweld flange in order to present a PRIMER ONLY surface under the following conditions:
          - Corrosion of the pinchweld flange is present
          - Sheet metal repairs or replacements are required
       • If paint repairs are required, mask the flange bonding area, prior to applying the color coat, in order to provide a PRIMER ONLY surface.
       • Use the following 2-part, catalyzed products for primer application:
          - BASF DE 17
          - DUPONT 2610
          - PPG DP90
       • Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the following primer application steps:
          - The mixture
          - The application
          - The dry times
       • After repairing the opening as indicated, perform the following steps:
          - Thoroughly shake the pinchweld primer #3 (black).
          - Use a new dauber to apply the primer to the primed surface of the flange in the bonding area.
          - Allow the primer to dry 10 minutes.

  10. Inspect the body pinchweld for any damage.
  11. Repair all damage before continuing with the quarter window replacement.

Installation Procedure

  1. Attach the quarter window applique tabs to the quarter window molding slots.
  2. Dry fit the glass into the body opening in order to determine the correct position.
  3. Perform the following procedures:
  4. 3.1. Position the window in the opening.
    3.2. Use masking tape to mark the location of the glass in the opening on one horizontal edge of the glass.

    Use masking tape to mark the location of the glass in the opening on one vertical edge of the glass.

    3.3. Slit the masking tape at the glass edges.

    Remove the window from the body opening.

    3.4. Place the window on a clean protected work surface with the inside surface facing up.
  5. If reinstalling the original window, use a razor knife to remove any existing urethane adhesive from the edge of the glass surface.
  6. Clean the surface of the window to which the urethane adhesive is being applied (around the edge of the inside surface).
  7. Use the following solutions to clean the glass surface:

    • An Isopropyl alcohol dampened cloth
    • GM Glass Cleaner P/N 1050427, or equivalent

    Important: Primer application is important because primers act as an agent that will bond the urethane to the applique. Use the specified primer for each application in order to ensure the proper adhesion.

  8. Thoroughly shake the pinchweld primer #3 (black). Apply the primer to any exposed surfaces where the urethane contacts the body.
  9. Allow the primer to dry for 10 minutes.

    Do not apply black pinchweld primer to any existing urethane surface.

    Important: Use care in order to prevent glass prep #1 (clear) from running into the vision area of the glass. Glass prep #1 dries nearly instantly. Apply the primer evenly in order to not stain the viewing area of the window.

  10. Using a new dauber, apply PVC primer #4 (clear) to the quarter window where the urethane is to be applied. Wipe the quarter window dry with a clean cloth.
  11. Shake the glass primer #2 (black) well. Use a new dauber in order to apply the primer to the same areas to which you apply the glass prep #1.
  12. Allow the primer to dry for approximately 6 to 10 minutes.
  13. Important: 

       • DO NOT apply clear primer over black primer.
       • DO NOT touch the primer coated surfaces.

  14. Tape the rear window reveal molding away from the applique in order to assist the installation.
  15. Apply a smooth continuous bead of urethane adhesive to the following components:
  16. • The applique
    • The quarter window assembly
  17. Remove the 2-way tape backing if using a new applique.
  18. Install the applique and the quarter window assembly by performing the following procedures:
  19. • Press the applique in order to set the urethane adhesive
    • Press the window assembly in order to set the urethane adhesive
    • Align the previously installed masking tape marks
    • Use care in order to avoid excessive squeeze out which may cause an appearance problem.
  20. Tape the following components to the body in order to minimize movement:
  21. • The applique
    • The quarter window
  22. Water test the window immediately using a soft spray.
  23. Warm or hot water is preferable in order to accelerate the cure of the adhesive.

    DO NOT direct high pressure water at the fresh urethane adhesive. Refer to Water Hose Test in Waterleaks.

    Important: 

       • Keep the vehicle at room temperature 22°C (72°F) and 30 percent relative humidity for a minimum of 6 hours.
       • Lower the door glass partially in order to prevent pressure build up when the doors are closed prior to the urethane adhesive cure.
       • DO NOT drive the vehicle until the urethane is cured (a minimum of 6 hours at room temperature).
       • DO NOT use compressed air in order to dry the urethane adhesive.

  24. Remove the tape from the applique and quarter window after the urethane has cured.
  25. Remove the protective tape.
  26. Remove the rear quarter trim panel. Refer to Rear Quarter Trim Panel Replacement in Interior Trim.

Removal Procedure

Secure the quarter window applique to the quarter window using locking tabs. Use urethane adhesive in order to secure the quarter window applique to the body opening.

    Caution: When replacing stationary windows, use Urethane Adhesive Kit GM P/N 12346392 (Canadian P/N 10952983), or a urethane adhesive system meeting GM Specification GM3651G, to maintain original installation integrity. Failure to use the urethane adhesive kit will result in poor retention of the window which may allow unrestrained occupants to be ejected from the vehicle resulting in personal injury.

  1. Apply tape to the body around the entire perimeter of the applique in order to prevent damage to the vehicle's finish.
  2. Pry up on the quarter window applique starting from the upper front.
  3. Cut through the following materials with a sharp, flat-bladed tool:
  4. • The urethane
    • The tape attaching the applique
  5. Pull the applique in order to disengage the tabs from the quarter window.
  6. Remove the quarter window applique.
  7. Inspect the rear window frame for any unusual damage.
  8. Repair all damage before continuing with the replacement of the rear window.

Installation Procedure

  1. Do not use the following products on the surfaces where the urethane is applied:
  2. • An aftermarket paint
    • A clear top coat
  3. Use the following primers only to repair any areas where the urethane is applied:
  4. • BASF DE17
    • Dupont 2610
    • PPG DP40
  5. Do not contaminate the remaining urethane base using primer or other materials.
  6. Inspect the surface of the applique and the body where the urethane adhesive is applied.
  7. Wipe the surface area with a clean, dry cloth.

    Important: Primer application is important because primers act as the agent that will bond the urethane to the applique. Use the specified primer for each application in order to ensure proper adhesion.

  8. Apply the black pinchweld primer, GM P/N 12346284 or equivalent, supplied in the urethane adhesive kit to the body surface where the urethane is to be applied.
  9. DO NOT apply black pinchweld primer to any existing urethane surface.

  10. Apply the black glass primer, GM P/N 1234684 or equivalent, supplied in the urethane adhesive kit to the applique where the urethane is applied.
  11. Allow the primer to dry.
  12. Cut the top portion of the slots on the quarter window molding enough so that the applique tabs may slide into the slots.
  13. Tape the rear window reveal molding away from the applique in order to assist the installation.
  14. Position the applique tabs into the quarter window slots.
  15. Install the applique tabs into the quarter window slots.
  16. Install the applique in order to check for proper alignment. Remove the applique.
  17. Remove the 2-way tape backing if a new applique is used.
  18. Position the applique tabs into the quarter window slots.
  19. Press the applique firmly in order to set the urethane adhesive.
  20. Use care to avoid excessive squeeze-out of the adhesive.

  21. Tape the applique to the body.
  22. Remove the tape from the applique after the urethane is cured.
