ON FEBRUARY 24, 1998, ALL VEHICLES INVOLVED IN THIS CAMPAIGN WERE PLACED ON STOP DELIVERY. AFTER THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE IS COMPLETED, THE VEHICLES MAY BE DELIVERED TO CUSTOMERS.

"THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES AND REPLACES CAMPAIGN BULLETIN 98013, DATED MARCH 1998. THIS BULLETIN IS BEING REVISED TO INCLUDE THE VALVE BODY SPACER PLATE GASKETS 8652506. GENERAL MOTORS HAS DECIDED THAT CERTAIN 1998 CHEVROLET CAVALIER AND PONTIAC SUNFIRE MODEL VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.2L 4-CYLINDER ENGINES (RPO LN2) AND 3T40 3-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS (RPO MD9) MAY EXHIBIT A CONDITION IN WHICH THERE IS A SLOW OR NO SECOND TO THIRD GEAR UPSHIFT. THIS MAY LEAD TO A TRANSMISSION FAILURE IF THESE CONDITIONS ARE IGNORED.

TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, DEALERS ARE TO CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION CASE COVER ASSEMBLY OR, IF NECESSARY, THE TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY, DEPENDENT ON A TRANSMISSION FLUID CHECKING PROCEDURE.

IF A CUSTOMER'S VEHICLE HAS THIS CONDITION BEFORE PARTS ARE AVAILABLE THE CUSTOMER SHOULD BE PROVIDED WITH A COURTESY VEHICLE UNTIL THE CAMPAIGN REPAIR HAS BEEN PERFORMED. EVERY EFFORT SHOULD BE MADE TO REPAIR THESE VEHICLES AS EXPEDITIOUSLY AS POSSIBLE.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

ALL UNSOLD NEW VEHICLES IN DEALERS' POSSESSION AND SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN MUST BE HELD AND INSPECTED/REPAIRED PER THE SERVICE PROCEDURE OF THIS CAMPAIGN BULLETIN BEFORE CUSTOMERS TAKE POSSESSION OF THESE VEHICLES.

2 THE FLUID COLOR COULD BE LIGHT BROWN. NOTICE: TRANSMISSION FLUID MAY TURN DARK WITH NORMAL USE. THIS DOES NOT ALWAYS INDICATE OXIDATION OR CONTAMINATION. IS THE FLUID COLOR LIGHT BROWN? GO TO STEP 4. GO TO STEP 3.

3 THE FLUID COLOR COULD BE DARK, HAVE A BURNT SMELL AND CONTAIN CLUTCH DEBRIS. IS THE FLUID DARK AND DOES IT SMELL BURNT? GO TO STEP 5. GO TO STEP 4.

4 REPLACE THE CASE COVER ASSEMBLY AND GASKETS PER THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE UNIT REPAIR MANUAL (TURM) PROCEDURES. IS THE REPAIR COMPLETE? GO TO STEP 6.

5 REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY PER THE SERVICE MANUAL PROCEDURES. IS THE REPAIR COMPLETE? GO TO STEP 6.

STEP 6. INSTALL THE GM CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL.

STEP 7. FOR VEHICLES DELIVERED TO RETAIL CUSTOMERS PRIOR TO FEBRUARY 24, 1998, FILL THE FUEL TANK BEFORE RETURNING THE VEHICLE TO THE OWNER.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

EACH VEHICLE CORRECTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS OUTLINED IN THIS PRODUCT CAMPAIGN BULLETIN WILL REQUIRE A "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL". EACH LABEL PROVIDES A SPACE TO INCLUDE THE CAMPAIGN NUMBER AND THE FIVE (5) DIGIT DEALER CODE OF THE DEALER PERFORMING THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE. THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR A BALL POINT PEN.

EACH "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL" IS TO BE LOCATED ON THE RADIATOR CORE SUPPORT IN AN AREA WHICH WILL BE VISIBLE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BROUGHT IN BY THE CUSTOMER FOR PERIODIC SERVICING. WHEN INSTALLING THE CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL, BE SURE TO PULL THE TAB TO ALLOW ADHESION OF THE CLEAR PROTECTIVE COVERING. CUSTOMERS WILL BE NOTIFIED BY FIRST CLASS MAIL OF THIS CAMPAIGN ON THEIR VEHICLES BY GENERAL MOTORS THE WEEK OF APRIL 6, 1998. IF A CUSTOMER'S VEHICLE HAS THIS CONDITION BEFORE PARTS ARE AVAILABLE THE CUSTOMER SHOULD BE PROVIDED WITH A COURTESY VEHICLE UNTIL THE CAMPAIGN REPAIR HAS BEEN PERFORMED. EVERY EFFORT SHOULD BE MADE TO REPAIR THESE VEHICLES AS EXPEDITIOUSLY AS POSSIBLE.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

ALL UNSOLD NEW VEHICLES IN DEALER'S POSSESSION AND SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN MUST BE HELD AND INSPECTED/REPAIRED PER THE SERVICE PROCEDURE OF THIS CAMPAIGN BULLETIN BEFORE CUSTOMERS TAKE POSSESSION OF THESE VEHICLES.

DEALERS ARE TO SERVICE ALL VEHICLES SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN AT NO CHARGE TO CUSTOMERS, FOR THE DURATION OF THE WARRANTY PERIOD.

CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED VEHICLES SOLD FROM YOUR VEHICLE INVENTORY, AND FOR WHICH THERE IS NO CUSTOMER INFORMATION INDICATED ON THE DEALER LISTING, ARE TO BE CONTACTED BY THE DEALER AFTER PARTS ARE AVAILABLE. ARRANGEMENTS ARE TO BE MADE TO MAKE THE REQUIRED CORRECTION ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS CONTAINED IN THIS BULLETIN. THIS COULD BE DONE BY MAILING TO SUCH CUSTOMERS A COPY OF THE APPROPRIATE CUSTOMER LETTER ACCOMPANYING THIS BULLETIN.

1 CHECK THE FLUID COLOUR. IS THE FLUID COLOUR RED? GO TO STEP 4. GO TO STEP 2.

2 THE FLUID COLOUR COULD BE LIGHT BROWN. NOTICE: TRANSMISSION FLUID MAY TURN DARK WITH NORMAL USE. THIS DOES NOT ALWAYS INDICATE OXIDATION OR CONTAMINATION. IS THE FLUID COLOUR LIGHT BROWN? GO TO STEP 4. GO TO STEP 3.

3 THE FLUID COLOUR COULD BE DARK, HAVE A BURNT SMELL AND CONTAIN CLUTCH DEBRIS. IS THE FLUID DARK AND DOES IT SMELL BURNT? GO TO STEP 5. GO TO STEP 4.

4 REPLACE THE CASE COVER ASSEMBLY AND GASKETS PER THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE UNIT REPAIR MANUAL (TURM) PROCEDURES. IS THE REPAIR COMPLETE? GO TO STEP 6.

5 REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY PER THE SERVICE MANUAL PROCEDURES. IS THE REPAIR COMPLETE? GO TO STEP 6.

STEP 6. INSTALL CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL.

STEP 7. FOR VEHICLES DELIVERED TO RETAIL CUSTOMERS PRIOR TO FEBRUARY 24, 1998, FILL THE FUEL TANK BEFORE RETURNING THE VEHICLE TO THE OWNER.

EACH VEHICLE CORRECTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS OUTLINED IN THIS PRODUCT CAMPAIGN BULLETIN WILL REQUIRE A "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL." EACH LABEL PROVIDES A SPACE TO INCLUDE THE CAMPAIGN NUMBER AND THE FIVE (5) DIGIT DEALER CODE OF THE DEALER PERFORMING THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE. THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR A BALL POINT PEN.
