Restraint System

Seat belts are the primary means of occupant restraint. Seat belts help to keep the occupant inside the passenger compartment and to endure the crash forces more gradually during the following events:

    • Frontal impact type crashes
    • Rear impact type crashes
    • Side impact type crashes
    • Roll-over type crashes

All seat belt retractors have two independent sensors that detect webbing and vehicle motion. During normal operation, the retractors remain unlocked to allow free movement of the occupant's upper body under normal driving conditions. The seat belt webbing is locked into position by the appropriate sensing mechanism under the following conditions:

    • The rapid extraction of the seat belt webbing from the retractor.
    • The speed of the vehicle changes abruptly.
    • The direction of the vehicle changes abruptly.
    • The vehicle is on a steep upgrade or downgrade.

When the seat belt webbing is locked, the spool of the retractor is engaged with the retractor frame.

In conjunction with the seat belts, this vehicle is equipped with a supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) System. Refer to supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) System in Restraints for more information about the SIR (air bag) System.

Front Seat System

The front seat belt system includes the following components:

    • The driver and passenger seat retractor side belts
The driver and passenger seat retractor side belts are attached to the rocker panel.
    • The driver seat buckle side belt
The driver seat buckle side belt is attached to the driver seat frame.
    • The passenger seat buckle side belt
The passenger seat buckle side belt is attached to the floor pan.

The driver's seat belt system includes a seat belt switch in the driver seat buckle side belt. The seat belt switch controls a reminder lamp and a tone alarm. When the driver's seat belt is buckled, the driver's door is closed, and the ignition switch is turned ON the following events will occur:

    • The tone alarm will not operate.
    • The reminder lamp will not operate.

When the driver's seat belt is not buckled, the driver's door is closed, and the ignition switch is turned ON, the following events will occur:

    • The tone alarm will operate for 4 to 8 seconds and then go OFF.
    • The reminder lamp will operate for 20 seconds, then the reminder lamp will flash for an additional 55 seconds before going OFF.

Refer to Audible Warning Chime Cell 76 in Electrical Diagnosis in order to diagnose a failure of the reminder tone alarm.

Refer to instrument panel cluster (IPC) microprocessor in order to diagnose a failure of the reminder lamp.

Rear Seat System

The rear seat belt system includes the following components:

    • The rear seat retractor-side belt
The rear seat retractor-side belt is attached to the rear window shelf.
    • The rear seat center belt
The rear seat center belt is attached to the floor pan.

Child Restraint

Caution: A child in a rear-facing child restraint can be seriously injured if the right-front passenger's air bag inflates. This is because the back of a rear-facing child restraint would be very close to the inflating air bag. It is always better to secure a child restraint in the rear seat. If a forward-facing child seat is suitable for your child, ALWAYS move the front passenger seat as far back as it will go and then install the child restraint. Be sure the child restraint position does not conflict with any additional requirements provided by the manufacturer. For more information, refer to the vehicle owner's manual and the instructions that came with the child restraint.

Install and secure the child seat according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Anchor the child seat if the child seat has a top strap. Refer to Child Restraint Belt Tether Location .

Passengers should not sit at locations where the seat belts are being used to secure the child seat.
