  11. Remove the upper bearing spring.
  12. Move the turn signal up to the right turn position.
  13. Remove the multifunction lever. Refer to Multifunction, Turn Signal, and Hazard Switch Replacement - On Vehicle .
  14. Remove the following components:
  15. • The signal switch arm screw
    • The signal switch arm
  16. For vehicles equipped with the following options, let the switch arm hang freely:
  17. • A tilt steering column
    • Cruise control
  18. Remove the following components:
  19. • The turn signal switch screws
    • The turn signal switch
    •  Let the turn signal switch hang freely.
  20. Remove the coil assembly connector shroud.
  21. Remove the steering column support bracket bolts.
  22. Remove the upper steering column bolts.
  23. Remove the wiring protector.
  24. Connect a length of mechanics's wire to the coil assembly terminal connector in order to aid the assembly procedure.
  25. Gently pull the wire harness through the following components:
  26. • The steering column housing shroud
    • The steering column housing
    • The lock assembly cover
  27. Remove the mechanic's wire.

Installation Procedure

  1. Connect the mechanic's wire to the centering coil assembly connector.
  2. Gently pull the connector through the following components:
  3. • The steering column housing shroud
    • The steering column housing
    • The lock assembly
  4. Remove the mechanics wire.
  5. Install the wiring protector.
  6. Install the connector shroud.
  7. Install the centering coil assembly terminal connector.
  8. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Install the steering column lower support bracket to the steering column.
  10. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  11. Install the steering column upper bracket support bolts.
  12. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  13. Install the turn signal switch assembly.
  14. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 3.4 N·m (30 lb in).

  15. For vehicles equipped with a tilt steering column, install the signal switch arm.
  16. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 2.3 N·m (20 lb in).

  17. Install the multifunction lever. Refer to Multifunction, Turn Signal, and Hazard Switch Replacement - On Vehicle .
  18. Lubricate the turn signal canceling cam assembly using the synthetic grease in the service kit.
  19. Install the turn signal canceling cam assembly.
  20. Install the shaft lock.
  21. Inspect the shaft lock retaining ring for damage or deformation. If the shaft lock retaining ring is damaged, replace the shaft lock retaining ring.
  22. Install the shaft lock retaining ring. Line up the shaft lock retaining ring order to block the tooth on the shaft . Use the J 23653-D in order to compress the shaft lock.
  23. Ensure that the shaft lock retaining ring is firmly seated in the groove on the shaft.
  24. For vehicle equipped with a standard steering column, install the spacer shaft lock.
  25. Important: Assemble the pre-centered coil assembly to the steering column. Remove the centering tab. Discard the centering tab.

Important: The coil assembly will un-center under the following conditions:

       • The steering column separates from the steering gear.
       • The steering column rotates.
       • The centering spring pushes down, allowing the hub to rotate while you remove the coil from the steering column.

  26. Center the coil. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflator Module Coil Centering .
  27. Install the coil assembly. Use the following components in order to align the coil assembly:
  28. • The horn tower on the canceling cam assembly inner ring
    • The projections on the outer ring
  29. Install the coil assembly retaining ring. Ensure that you seat the coil assembly retaining ring firmly in the groove on the shaft.
  30. Important: Gently pull the lower coil assembly wire in order to remove any kinks in the wire inside the column assembly. DO NOT ALLOW ANY KINKS OR BENDS IN THE SIR COIL ASSEMBLY WIRE. If there is a kink or bend in the wire interference may occur with the shaft lock mechanism. Turning the steering wheel may cut or damage the wire.

  31. Install the steering wheel assembly. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  32. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System .
