Use the correct size steel pipe and fittings
(brake fitting near rear axle shown). The outside diameter of the pipe specifies
the size. Refer to
Brake Pipe Replacement
for use of J 23530
for front brakes application.
Cut the steel pipe to the length of 3 mm (1/8) for each flare.
Install the fittings on the pipe before starting the flare.
Chamfer the inside and the outside diameter of the steel pipe
with a deburring tool.
Remove all traces of the lubricant from the brake pipe and the
flaring tool.
Clamp the flaring tool body J 29803-A
(ISO) in a vise.
Select the correct size collet and forming mandrel for the correct pipe
size that is being used.
Insert the proper forming mandrel in the tool body.
Hold the forming mandrel in place with your finger. Thread the
forcing screw in until it makes contact and begins to move the forming mandrel.
Slide the clamping nut (2) over the brake pipe (1) and into the correct
collet (3). Leave approximately 19 mm (3/4 in) of the pipe
extending out of the collet.
The brake pipe end must contact the face of the forming mandrel
in order to insert the assembly into the tool body.
Tightly fasten the clamping nut into the tool body in order to
prevent the pipe from pushing out.
Tighten the forcing screw with a wrench until the forcing screw
bottoms out. Do not over tighten the forcing screw. Over tightening the screw
will cause the flare to become oversized.
Take the clamping nut out of the tool body.
Assemble the clamping nut and the collet assembly to make the flare
ready for use.
Use a pipe bender in order to bend the pipe. Bending the pipe
ensures a match to the old pipe.
