Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 1859-A Universal Steering Wheel Puller
    • J 42578 Steering Wheel Puller Legs

    Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  2. Object Number: 247470  Size: SH
  3. Remove the horn pad assembly.
  4. Remove the horn wire and switch assembly. Refer to Horn Switch Replacement - On Vehicle .

  5. Object Number: 245807  Size: SH
  6. Remove the steering wheel nut.

  7. Object Number: 228500  Size: SH
  8. Mark the position of the steering wheel relative to the steering column shaft.
  9. This mark will assist in installation.

  10. Use the J 1859-A and J 42578 in order to remove the steering wheel from the steering column shaft.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 228512  Size: SH
  1. Apply a thin coat of lithium grease to the bottom of the horn contact ring (1).

  2. Object Number: 228500  Size: SH

    Important: Ensure that the steering wheel is properly oriented to the steering column so that the appropriate clearance holes in the wheel hub are aligned with the horn tower. Block teeth in the steering wheel spline must be aligned with the block teeth on the steering column spline in 180 increments.

  3. Position the steering wheel to the splined shaft of the steering column.
  4. Align the marks made during the removal procedure.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Seat the steering wheel firmly against the shaft of the steering column. Install the steering wheel nut.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the steering wheel nut to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).

  7. Connect the horn switch. Refer to Horn Switch Replacement - On Vehicle .
  8. Install the horn pad assembly.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
