Connect a J 39200 DMM from the battery positive (+) terminal to the battery negative (-) terminal.

Does the voltage measure more than 10 volts?

  1. Ensure that the battery terminals and terminal bolts are free from corrosion.
  2. Charge the battery. Refer to Battery Charging .
  3. Verify that the charging system is operating correctly. Refer to Charging System Check .

Inspect the IGN A fuse and the ALT/START fuse in the engine wiring harness junction block (underhood fuse relay center).

Is either fuse open?

  1. Locate and repair the source of the overload in CKT 242 (RED) or CKT 739 (PNK).
  2. Replace the fuse.

Is the repair complete?

Inspect the CRANK fuse in the fuse block.

Locate and repair the source of the overload in CKT 806 (PPL).

  1. Place the transmission in the PARK (P) position.
  2. Apply the park brake and block the wheels.
  3. Connect a J 39200 DMM from the starter solenoid S terminal to ground.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to START position.
  5. Measure the voltage.
  6. Turn the ignition OFF.

Did the voltage measure more than 10 volts?

10 V

  1. Ensure that the battery terminals are clean and tight.
  2. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .
  3. Clean the following :
  4. • The starter motor mounting bolts
    • The starter motor mounting surface
    • The engine block mounting surface
  5. Install the starter motor.
  6. Attempt to start the engine.
  7. If the starter does not crank the engine, replace the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

Notice: Do not clean or immerse the starter motor parts in grease dissolving solvents. The solvents will dissolve the grease packed in the drive or the bearings, and may damage the armature or the field coil insulation.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Connect a J 39200 from the IGN A fuse, cavity M 6 to ground.
  2. Measure the voltage.

Is the voltage greater than the specified value?

10 V

Locate and repair the open in CKT 2 (RED) between the IGN A fuse and the starter solenoid B terminal.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

  1. Connect a J 39200 from the ALT/START fuse, cavity L 8 to ground.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

Was the voltage greater than the specified value?

10 V

  1. Connect a J 39200 from the ignition switch connector, cavity D 5 to ground.
  2. Measure the voltage.

Is the voltage greater than the specified value?

Locate and repair the open in CKT 242 (RED) between the ignition switch connector and the IGN A fuse.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Connect a J 39200 from the ignition switch connector, cavity C 5 to ground.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

Was the voltage greater than the specified value?

Locate and repair the open in CKT 3 (PNK) between the ignition switch connector and the ALT/START fuse.

  1. Connect a J 39200 from the CRANK fuse, cavity D 6 to ground.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

Was the voltage greater than the specified value?

  1. Connect a J 39200 from the ignition switch connector, cavity D 1 to ground.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

Locate and repair the open in CKT 5 (YEL) between the ignition switch connector and the CRANK fuse.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM) connector C 1. Refer to Powertrain Control Module Connector End Views in Engine Controls.
  2. Connect a J 39200 from the PCM connector C 1, cavity 16 to ground.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  4. Measure the voltage.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

Was the voltage greater than the specified value?

10 V

Locate and repair the open in CKT 806 (PPL) between the CRANK fuse and the PCM connector C 1.

  1. Disconnect the starter relay. Refer to Starter Motor Relay Replacement .
  2. Connect a J 39200 from the starter relay connector, cavity A 9 to ground.
  3. Measure the voltage.

Is the voltage greater than the specified value?

Locate and repair the open in CKT 242 (RED) between the starter relay connector and the IGN A fuse.

  1. Connect a J 39200 from the stater relay connector, cavity B 9 to ground.

  3. Measure the voltage.

Is the voltage greater than the specified value?

Is the resistance greater than the specified value?

1.0 ohms

Locate and repair the open in CKT 6 (PPL) between the starter relay connector and the starter solenoid S terminal.

  1. Connect a J 39200 from the starter relay connector, cavity A 7 to the PCM connector C 1, cavity 1.
  2. Measure the resistance.

Is the resistance greater than the specified value?

1.0 ohms

Locate and repair the open in CKT 447 (YEL) between the starter relay connector and the PCM connector C 1.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Connect the starter relay.
  2. Install a fused jumper wire from the PCM connector C 1, cavity 1 to ground. Refer to Using Connector Test Adapters , and Using Fused Jumper Wires in Wiring Systems.
  3. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Did the starter motor crank?

  1. Ensure that the transmission is in the PARK position.
  2. Connect a test light from the PCM connector C 1, cavity 32 to B +.
