Inspection Procedure

    Important: Vehicles involved in accidents may have a damaged or misaligned steering column if the accident resulted in frame damage, major body or sheet metal damage, an impacted steering column, or deployment of supplemental inflatable restraint systems.

  1. Check the capsules on the steering column bracket assembly to make sure all capsules are securely seated in the bracket slots.
  2. Check for any loose conditions when pushing or pulling the capsules by hand. If any capsules are loose, perform one of the following items:
  3. • If the bracket is welded to the jacket assembly, replace the jacket assembly.
    • If the bracket is bolted to the jacket assembly, replace the bracket.

  4. Measure the distance from the lower edge of the upper jacket to a defined point on the lower jacket.
  5. Install a new jacket if the measured dimensions are not within specifications.

  6. Object Number: 303724  Size: SH
  7. Visually inspect the steering shaft for sheared injected plastic.
  8. Install a new steering shaft if the steering shaft shows sheared plastic.
  9. Check the steering shaft runout for frame damage by performing the following steps:
  10. 7.1. Rotate the steering wheel.
    7.2. Use a dial indicator at the lower end of the steering shaft.
    7.3. Rotate the steering wheel.

            Important: Runout must not exceed 1.60 mm.

    7.4. Check for runout.
