Perform the OBD (On-Board Diagnostic) system check. Refer to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls.

Were any diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's) stored?

Go to DTC P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit in Engine Controls.

Go to Step 4

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  2. Observe the voltmeter in the instrument cluster.

Is the voltmeter within the specified values?

10.0 V-14.0 V

Inspect the GAUGES fuse in the Fuse Block.

Is the fuse open?

Go to Step 6

  1. Inspect the wiring harness for a short to ground in CKT 39 (PNK) between the Fuse Block and the instrument cluster.
  2. If a short circuit was located, repair the wiring harness.
  3. Replace the fuse.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

  1. Connect a test light from the GAUGES fuse, cavity J 7 to ground.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.

Does the test light illuminate?

--

Repair the open in CKT 3 (PNK) between the ignition switch connector, cavity C 5 and the GAUGES fuse.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

  1. Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
  2. Connect a test light from cavity 7 of the instrument cluster connector to ground.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.

Does the test light illuminate?

--

Go to Step 11

Locate and repair the open in CKT 39 (PNK) between the GAUGES fuse and the instrument cluster connector.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

Connect a test light from the instrument cluster connector, cavity 4 to B +.

Does the test light illuminate?

Locate and repair the open in CKT 451 (BLK/WHT) between the instrument cluster connector and G 102.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Disconnect the speedometer adapter module connecter. Refer to Speedometer Adapter Replacement in Engine Controls.
  2. Connect a test light from cavity 14 of the instrument cluster connector to B +.

Does the test light illuminate?

--

Locate and repair the short to ground in CKT 389 (DK GRN) between the speedometer adapter module connector and the instrument cluster connector.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

Use a J 39200 to measure the resistance from the instrument cluster connector, cavity 14 to the speedometer adapter module connector, cavity 15.

Is the resistance greater than the specified value?

1.0ohms

Locate and repair the open in CKT 389 (DK GRN) between the speedometer adapter module connector and the instrument cluster connector.

Is the repair complete?
