Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 3049-A Valve Lifter Remover

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.

  4. Remove the upper intake manifold from the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 64532  Size: SH
  6. Remove the lower intake manifold from the cylinder head. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

  7. Object Number: 64534  Size: SH
  8. Install the valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .

  10. Remove the valve rocker arm and the valve pushrod from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  12. Remove the oil splash shield on the intake manifold from the engine block.

  13. Object Number: 173193  Size: SH
  14. Remove the retainer from the engine block.

  15. Object Number: 173176  Size: SH
  16. Remove the valve lifter and the guide from the engine block.

  17. Object Number: 34571  Size: SH
  18. Use the J 3049-A if a valve lifter is stuck in the engine block, due to gum or varnish deposits.
  19. Inspect the valve lifter bore in the engine block for excessive wear. Refer to Engine Block Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure

Important: Replace the engine oil and the oil filter if new valve lifters or a camshaft are installed. Add engine oil supplement GM P/N 1052367 to the crankcase oil.

Replace all of the valve lifters if a new camshaft is installed.

  1. Install the valve lifter guide retainer into the engine block.

  2. Object Number: 173193  Size: SH
  3. Install the valve lifter and the valve guide into the engine block.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the retaining bolts for the valve lifter guide retainer to the engine block.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  7. Install the valve rocker arm and the valve pushrod into the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  9. Install the valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .

  10. Object Number: 173192  Size: SH
  11. Install the intake manifold splash shield to the engine block.

  12. Object Number: 64532  Size: SH
  13. Install the lower intake manifold to the engine block. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

  14. Object Number: 64529  Size: SH
  15. Install the upper intake manifold to the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  16. Connect the battery negative cable.
  17. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
