Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 5892-C Valve Spring Compressor
    • J 23590 Spark Plug Port Adapter

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.

  2. Object Number: 64534  Size: SH
  3. Remove the valve rocker arm cover from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  4. Rotate the crankshaft until both the intake and exhaust valves are closed before applying the compressed air into the cylinder being serviced.

  5. Object Number: 172998  Size: SH
  6. Remove the valve rocker arm and the valve pushrod from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  7. Remove the spark plug from the cylinder head. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement .

  8. Object Number: 66450  Size: SH
  9. Remove the valve keepers as follows:
  10. 6.1. Install the J 23590 into the spark plug hole.
    6.2. Apply compressed air into the cylinders in order to hold the valves closed.
    6.3. Lightly tap the valve spring retainer in order to loosen the valve keepers.
    6.4. Install the J 5892-C to the cylinder head.
    6.5. Install the valve rocker arm bolt.

            Important: Tighten the valve rocker arm bolt enough in order to hold J 5892-C in place while compressing the valve and valve spring assembly.

    6.6. Use the J 5892-C in order to compress the valve spring assembly.
    6.7. Remove the valve keepers.

            Important: Do not release the compressed air from the cylinder being worked on. The valve will fall into the cylinder bore.

    6.8. Carefully release the spring tension and remove the J 5892-C .
    6.9. Remove the J 5892-C from the cylinder head.

  11. Remove the valve spring retainer  (2) and the valve spring (4) from the cylinder head.
  12. Remove the valve stem oil seal from the valve guide.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 5892-C Valve Spring Compressor
    • J 23590 Spark Plug Port Adapter
  1. Install the valve stem oil seal to the valve guide.
  2. Install the valve spring retainer and the spring.

  3. Object Number: 66450  Size: SH
  4. Use the J 5892-C in order to install the valve springs and the keepers to the cylinder head.
  5. Install the valve keepers to the valve as follows:
  6. 4.1. With the compressed air still applied, use the J 5892-C in order to compress the valve spring assembly.
    4.2. Install the valve keepers to the valve being worked on. Apply a small amount of clean grease in order to aid in holding the valve keepers in place.
    4.3. Carefully release the tension on the valve spring assembly. Ensure the valve keepers do not move while releasing the tension.
    4.4. Remove the J 5892-C from the valve assembly.
    4.5. Carefully release the compressed air from the cylinder being worked on.
  7. Install the spark plug into the cylinder head. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement .

  8. Object Number: 64537  Size: SH
  9. Install the valve rocker arms and the valve pushrods into the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  10. Object Number: 64534  Size: SH
  11. Install the valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  12. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery.
