Removal Procedure

Important: Do not raise the engine by the crankshaft balancer to perform this service procedure. Damage to the crankshaft balancer or the crankshaft may occur.

Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the Battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement .
  2. Remove the oil level indicator and tube from the engine. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  3. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Drain the crankcase. Refer to Draining Fluids and Oil Filter Removal .
  5. Remove the starter from the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .
  6. Remove the flywheel inspection cover if equipped.
  7. Remove the oil cooler line retainer from the retaining bracket.
  8. Important: Do not lift the engine by the crankshaft balancer to aide in removing the oil pan from the engine block. Damage to crankshaft balancer or crankshaft could occur.

  9. Remove the transmission from the vehicle (coil spring suspension only).
  10. • For the manual transmission refer to Transmission Replacement
    •  For the 4L80-E automatic transmission refer to Transmission Replacement

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the oil pan bolts to the engine block.
  8. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
