Subject: | Second Row Easy Entry 40% Rear Seat Will Not Unlock
or Release (Replace Latch Assembly) |
Models: | 2001 Chevrolet and GMC C/K Models (Suburban, Yukon XL only) |
| With Second Row Easy Entry 40% Seat (RPO AT5) |
Condition
Some customers may comment that the second row folding seat on the passenger
(40%) side of the vehicle will not unlock and slide forward to allow for easier
access to the third row seat or cargo area. Other customers may comment that
this same seat is stuck in the full forward position.
Cause
The part of the latch assembly that the release cable connects to on
the inboard seat track may be cracked or broken.
Correction
Replace the latch assembly with P/N 88940000 using the following
service procedure.
- Move the front passenger side seat to the full forward position.
- Fold the 40% seat back down.
- Remove the screw attaching the seat back release handle and remove
the handle.
- Remove the fasteners attaching the outboard seat track cover.
- Remove the inboard hinge cover.
- For bolt removal access, remove the right hinge cover from the
60% seat assembly.
- Disconnect the easy entry seat cable.
- Remove the seat back hinge bolts from the seat track base and
remove the seat back from the vehicle.
- Remove the seat belt buckle from the recliner/latch assembly.
- Release the J-strip on the cover from the bottom of the seat back.
Notice: When drilling out the three rivets in the next step, only drill far
enough to remove the rivet heads. Do not drill out the complete rivet at this
time. Drilling out the complete rivet at this time may result in the drill
bit puncturing the seat back cover material.
- Using the appropriate size drill bit, carefully drill and remove only
the rivet heads that attach the seat back lower folding panel hinge to the
seat back.
- Remove the seat back lower folding panel and hinge assembly from
the seat back.
Notice: When drilling out the remaining parts of the three rivets in the next
step, reposition the seat back material as necessary to avoid damaging it
by the drill bit. The use of a small block of wood positioned between the
seat back material and the seat back plastic panel is recommended.
- Reposition the seat back cover material as necessary and remove the
remaining parts of the three rivets in the plastic seat back panel.
- Roll up the seat back cover as far as necessary in order to access
the bolts attaching the recliner/latch assembly to the seat back frame.
- Remove the recliner/latch assembly attaching bolts from the seat
back frame and remove the recliner/latch assembly.
- Install the new recliner/latch assembly to the seat back frame
and install the attaching bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).
- Roll the seat back cover material down.
- Position the seat back lower folding panel to the seat back and
install three rivets, P/N 2477054, or equivalent.
- Reconnect the J-strip on the seat back cover at the bottom of
the seat back.
- Install the seat belt buckle to the recliner/latch assembly and
install the nut.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 9 N·m (80 lb in).
- Install the seat back to the seat track base in the vehicle and
install the bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).
- Connect the easy entry seat back cable.
- Install the right hinge cover on the 60% seat assembly.
- Install the inboard hinge cover.
- Install the outboard seat track cover and install the fasteners.
- Install the seat back release handle and install the attaching
screw.

Tighten the screw to 2 N·m (18 lb in).
- Position the seat belt buckles and fold the seat back and cushion
to the upright position.
