LOW OIL PRESSURE READINGS

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1987-88 L-CARS W/2.8L AND 2.0L WITH GAGE ------------------ CLUSTER (U21/UB3)

The oil pressure gage on some 1987-88 L-cars may read in the red warning zone during a hot idle condition. This could be a false indication of an oil pressure condition due to an improper sender calibration.

Engine oil pressure should be checked using a verified accurate external gauge installed in place of the oil pressure sender. The minimum oil pressure measured at hot idle should be 41 kpa (6 PSI) and this pressure should immediately increase when engine RPM is increased. If these readings are bad, there may be a problem within the engine oil distribution system.

If the engine has proper oil pressure, a new oil pressure sender can be installed which redefines the gauge reading at the low end of the scale. This should give the customer a more accurate warning of low engine oil pressure.
