CARPET STAINED BELOW BOTTOM OF WINDSHIELD

SUBJECT: CARPET STAINED BELOW BOTTOM OF WINDSHIELD SIDE GARNISH MOLDINGS LEFT/RIGHT SIDES (REPLACE FELT MATERIAL, REMOVE STAINS, CHECK FOR WATERLEAKS)

MODELS: 1993-94 CHEVROLET CORVETTE

CONDITION:

OWNERS OF SOME VEHICLES MAY COMMENT ON STAINED OR WET SPOTS ON CARPET BELOW THE WINDSHIELD SIDE GARNISH MOLDING.

CAUSE:

THE STAINS MAY BE THE RESULT OF A NON-COLOR FAST FELT ANTI-RATTLE MATERIAL USED ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE WINDSHIELD SIDE GARNISH MOLDING, COMBINED WITH A WATER LEAK IN THE SAME GENERAL AREA.

CORRECTION:

1. REMOVE BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT WINDSHIELD SIDE GARNISH MOLDINGS.

2. INSPECT THE BACK SIDE OF THE MOLDINGS TO DETERMINE IF A BLACK ANTI-RATTLE MATERIAL IS PRESENT, AND IF SO, IS IT FELT OR VELCRO(R)? THE FELT MATERIAL SHOULD BE REPLACED. DO NOT REPLACE VELCRO(R) MATERIAL, DETERMINE SOURCE OF WATERLEAK AND CORRECT.

NOTE: THE BLACK FELT MATERIAL WILL FEEL THIN AND SOMEWHAT SOFTER THAN VELCRO(R) WHICH HAS A THICKER FEELING. IF UNSURE WHICH MATERIAL HAS BEEN USED, REPLACE WHAT IS PRESENT.

3. REMOVE THE FELT MATERIAL BY SCRAPING WITH A FLAT BLADE TOOL AND THEN SATURATE REMAINDER WITH 3M GENERAL PURPOSE ADHESIVE CLEANER #8984 OR EQUIVALENT TO COMPLETELY REMOVE REMAINDER. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE CONTAINER.

4. REPLACE REMOVED FELT MATERIAL WITH 3M HOOK AND LOOP MATERIAL #06481 OR EQUIVALENT, USING ONLY THE LOOP SIDE; OR USE 3M SCOTCHFOAM BLACK VINYL FOAM TAPE #06375 OR EQUIVALENT. BE SURE TO PLACE MATERIAL IN THE SAME LOCATION AS THAT WHICH WAS REMOVED.

5. TO REMOVE STAINS IN CARPET MATERIAL USE GM TYPE CLEANERS. TWO CLEANERS ARE AVAILABLE, A SOLVENT TYPE SPOT LIFTER AND A FOAM TYPE POWDERED CLEANER. THESE CLEANERS WILL CLEAN NORMAL SPOTS AND STAINS VERY WELL WHEN INSTRUCTIONS ON THE CONTAINER ARE FOLLOWED.

DO NOT USE: ALCOHOL, LAUNDRY SOAP, BLEACH OR REDUCING AGENTS.

WATER LEAK CORRECTION:

BEFORE REINSTALLING GARNISH MOLDINGS, PERFORM WATER LEAK TEST ON FRONT OF VEHICLE AND DETERMINE POINT OF ENTRY AND MAKE NECESSARY REPAIR.

SOME POTENTIAL AREAS FOR WATER ENTRY WOULD INCLUDE:

. GAPS OR VOIDS OF WEATHERSTRIP ADHESIVE OR SEALER ACROSS WINDSHIELD HEADER.

. GAPS OR VOIDS OF WEATHERSTRIP ADHESIVE OR SEALER AT UPPER CORNER OF WINDSHIELD.
