Problem

Action

Air is in the power steering system.

  1. Inspect the power steering system.
  2. Bleed the power steering system.

Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .

The joints from the column to the steering gear are loose.

  1. Check for correct torque.
  2. Replace components as needed.

Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .

The rack bearings preload are misadjusted.

Torque to proper specifications.

Refer to Rack and Pinion Gear Rack Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle .

The steering gear attachments are loose.

  1. Service and/or replace as needed.
  2. Torque to proper specifications.

Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement .

The tie rod ends are loose.

  1. Inspect the tie rods.
  2. Replace as needed.

Refer to Tie Rod End Replacement - Outer .

The wheel bearings are worn.

Replace the hub and bearing.
