Buzz from Rear of Door Trim Panel
Symptom
Buzz from the rear of the door with radio tuned to high bass level.
Possible Cause
Energy absorber vibrating.
Diagnosis
Tune radio to full base and listen for buzz.
Corrective Action
- Remove the door trim panel. Refer to
Door Trim Panel Replacement
in Doors.
- Replace any worn door trim panel fir tree fasteners.
- Remove the energy absorber and clean the trim panel of all traces
of hot melt glue residue.
- Install a new energy absorber with butyl tape.
- Install the trim panel. Refer to
Door Trim Panel Replacement
in Doors.
Itch/Creak from Door Trim Panel
Symptom
Itch or creak from the door trim panel when driving with an arm on the
arm rest.
Possible Cause
The energy absorber is not completely adhered to the inside of the door
trim panel. Or the trim panel plastic fir tree clips are worn and are not
gripping tightly.
Diagnosis
Road test with an arm on the arm rest and listen for the itch/creak.
Corrective Action
- Remove the door trim panel. Refer to
Door Trim Panel Replacement
in Doors.
- Replace any worn fir tree fasteners.
- Remove the energy absorber and clean the trim panel of all traces
of hot melt glue residue.
- Install a new energy absorber with butyl tape.
- Lubricate 2/3 of top rear edge portion with GM P/N 3634770
weather-strip lubricant, or equivalent.
- Install the trim panel. Refer to

Clicking from Door Window
Symptom
Clicking from the door window when the window is raised.
Possible Cause
The door window cables are contacting the window.
Diagnosis
Lower the door window and then raise the window and listen for a clicking
sound as the window nears the full up position.
Corrective Action
- Remove the door trim panel. Refer to
Door Trim Panel Replacement
in Doors.
- Loosely tie strap the inner cable to the door inner panel using
the hole behind the lock control rods.
- Make sure the cables are also loosely tie strapped to each other.
- Install the door trim panel. Refer to
Door Trim Panel Replacement
in Doors.
Grinding Noise from Door Window
Symptom
Grinding noise from the window.
Possible Cause
Window regulator.
Diagnosis
Cycle the window and listen for the noise.
Corrective Action
Replace the window regulator with a new one. Refer to
Door Window Regulator Replacement
in Doors.
Rattle when Closing the Door
Symptom
Rattle when door is closed with the window down.
Possible Cause
The window regulator attachments are loose. Also see the next procedure.
Diagnosis
Lower the door window and close the door while listening for the rattle.
Corrective Action
Tighten the window regulator mounting nuts.
- Remove the door trim panel and the water deflector. Refer to

- Tighten the regulator mounting nuts to specifications. Refer to
Fastener Tightening Specifications
in Doors.
- Install the door water deflector and trim panel. Refer to
Door Water Deflector Replacement
in Doors.
Rattle when Closing the Door or while Driving
Symptom
Rattle when closing the door or when driving on a bumpy road.
Possible Cause
A lock rod is loose in the handle.
Diagnosis
Open and close the door while listening for noise.
- Remove the door trim panel and the water deflector. Refer to
Door Water Deflector Replacement
in Doors.
- Check the rod to handle attachments for looseness.
- Determine if the rod is undersized or if the rod receiver opening
in the handle is oversized.
Corrective Action
Replace the handle and/or the rod. Refer to

Rattle from Door while Driving
Symptom
Rattle from the door while driving with the window full down.
Possible Cause
- The vehicle has a first design window regulator.
- The window regulator attachments are loose.
Diagnosis
- Road test with the window full down and listen for the rattle.
- Raise the window 13 mm (1/2 in) while driving and listen
for the rattle to stop.
Corrective Action
- Remove the door trim panel and water deflector. Refer to
Door Water Deflector Replacement
in Doors.
- Use a mirror to check the part number on the tag on the back side
of the regulator motor.
• | P/N 10413039 or 10413040 the regulator is the first design. |
• | P/N 10417572 or 10417573 the regulator is the second design. |
- Replace the first design regulator with a second design regulator.

- Tighten the second design regulator mounting nuts to specifications.

Rattle or Itch from top of Window while Driving
Symptom
Rattle or itch from the top of the door window.
Possible Cause
Door window contacting the blow out clip.
Diagnosis
Road test with the top and the window up. Apply pressure to the window
to eliminate the noise.
Corrective Action
- Adjust the window tip-in to gain 3 mm (1/8 in) clearance
between the clip and the window. Refer to

- In some cases it may be necessary to bend the clip to gain clearance.
Squeak from Door
Symptom
Squeak when opening or closing the door.
Possible Cause
The door hinge roller lacks lubricant.
Diagnosis
Open and close the door and listen for the squeak.
Corrective Action
Lubricate the hinge roller with multi-purpose lubricant, Superlube®
(GM P/N 12346241 or equivalent).
Rattle When Shutting Door
Symptom
A rattle during a door slam with the window down
Possible Cause
The door glass bounces against the door beltline outer sealing strip,
pushing the sealing strip against the door outer panel causing a rattle.
Diagnosis
Slam the door shut when the window is down and listen for rattle.
Corrective Action
Eliminate the rattle by adding 2 strips of 31.8mm x 41.3mm (1 1/4in
x 1 5/8in) of velcro loop material GM P/N 12520273 on the outboard side of
the sealing strip between the seal and the door.
