Clunk from Under Front of Vehicle

Symptom

Clunk from the front suspension.

Possible Cause

Stabilizer link nuts not properly torqued.

Diagnosis

Road test and listen for clunk.

Corrective Action

Torque the nuts to specifications. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications in Front Suspension.

Rattle from Under Rear of Vehicle

Symptom

Rattle from the rear suspension.

Possible Cause

Shock absorber upper bolts are loose or cross threaded.

Diagnosis

Road test over a bumpy surface and listen for the rattle.

Corrective Action

  1. Clean the threads.
  2. Torque the bolts to specifications. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications in Rear Suspension.

Metallic Clunk from Under Rear of Vehicle

Symptom

Metallic clunk from under the rear of the vehicle on rough roads.

Possible Cause

Internal component of rear tie rod inner end.

Diagnosis

Road test and listen for the clunk.

Corrective Action

Replace the tie rod inner end. Refer to Tie Rod Replacement in Rear Suspension.

Chatter from Under Rear of Vehicle


Object Number: 180497  Size: SH

Problem

Chatter from under the rear of the vehicle on tight turns.

Possible Cause

The axle is low on fluid.

Diagnosis

Road test the vehicle in a parking lot making slow speed tight turns. Check the axle fluid level.

Corrective Action

Drain and refill the axle with 1.6L (l.69 quarts) of GM P/N 12378261 Synthetic Axle Lubricant and 118ml (4 ounces) of Limited-Slip Axle Lubricant Additive.

Rattle from Under Rear of Vehicle


Object Number: 384313  Size: SH

Symptom

Rattle from under rear of the vehicle from the exhaust hanger.

Possible Cause

The exhaust muffler blade moves inside the rear hanger.

Diagnosis

Road test and listen for the rattle. Insert a shim between the muffler hanger blade and the exhaust hanger. Road test for the elimination of the rattle.

Corrective Action

Replace the hanger. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications in Engine Exhaust.

Rattle from Fuel Tank


Object Number: 509353  Size: SH

Symptom

Rattle sounding like a loose part knocking against another part. Rattle could sound like its coming from the quarter panels.

Possible Cause

Slight movements of the fuel tank are not insulated from the intermediate body panel.

Diagnosis

Road test and listen for the rattle. Place a hand on the intermediate panel behind the seats and feel for the tank contacting the panel.

Corrective Action

  1. Remove the fuel tank retention straps/shields. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement (Right) or Fuel Tank Replacement (Left) in Engine Controls.
  2. Lower the tank slightly and support the tank.
  3. Cut a piece of 7 mm (1/4 in) thick closed cell foam to the following dimensions.
  4. • 60 mm (2.5 in) wide
    • 185 mm (7.25 in) long
  5. Glue the piece of foam vertically to the surface of the tank just below the handle.
  6. Use a long screwdriver or other tool to help slide the foam piece up into position.

  7. Install the fuel tank straps/shields. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement (Right) or Fuel Tank Replacement (Left) in Engine Controls.

Rolling Sound from Under Vehicle

Symptom

Rolling sound from under the vehicle when performing abrupt driving maneuvers.

Possible Cause

There is a portion of a replaced rivet nut or other metal object in a frame rail.

Diagnosis

Raise the vehicle and hit the frame rails with a metal hammer while listening for a jingle.

Correction

  1. Securely attach a magnet to a wire.
  2. Insert the magnet on a wire through a tie down slot or other opening and remove object from the frame.

Slap from Under Rear of Vehicle


Object Number: 180566  Size: SH

Symptom

Slap or rattle from under the rear of the vehicle when driving over bumps in the road.

Possible Cause

The parking brake cable(s) is/are hitting the rear compartment floor or frame rail outboard of the retaining clip.

Diagnosis

Road test over bumps and/or raise the vehicle and tap on the cables and listen for slap sound.

Corrective Action

Install foam tape to the floor or frame rail at the point of the cable contact.

Creaking Noise From Rear Underbody


Object Number: 659215  Size: SH

Symptom

Creaking noise from the rear underbody during hard accelerations, braking and during conditions that twist the body.

Possible Cause

Check for complete mig welds in the floor panel tunnel brackets to the outer rail in the rear of the fuel tank opening by using a prybar to flex the bracket.

Diagnosis

Road test the vehicle. Listen for creaking noise.

Corrective Action

Complete the welds for repair. Refer to fuel tank replacement Fuel Tank Replacement in Engine Controls -- 5.7L.
