GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

Caution: Batteries produce explosive gases. Batteries contain corrosive acid. Batteries supply levels of electrical current high enough to cause burns. Therefore, in order to reduce the risk of personal injury while working near a battery, observe the following guidelines:

       • Always shield your eyes.
       • Avoid leaning over the battery whenever possible.
       • Do not expose the battery to open flames or sparks.
       • Do not allow battery acid to contact the eyes or the skin.
          - Flush any contacted areas with water immediately and thoroughly.
          - Get medical help.

Notice: Push starting the vehicle can, under some conditions, cause damage to the catalytic converter and an automatic transmission.

This vehicle has a 12 Volt, negative ground electrical system. Make sure the vehicle or equipment being used to jump start the engine is also 12 Volt, negative ground. Use of any other type of system will damage the vehicle's electrical components.

  1. The following procedure is a typical battery to battery hookup for jump starting.
  2. The booster battery (4) and the discharged battery (3) should be treated carefully when using jumper cables. Do not cause sparks.
  3. Position the vehicle with the charged (booster) battery (4) so that the jumper cables will reach. Do not let the vehicles touch.
  4. Attach the end of one jumper cable (6) to the positive terminal of the booster battery (4).
  5. Attach the other end of the same cable (2) to the positive terminal of the discharged battery (3).
  6. Attach one end of the second jumper cable (5) to the negative terminal of the booster battery (4).
  7. Caution: Do not connect a jumper cable directly to the negative terminal of a discharged battery to prevent sparking and possible explosion of battery gases.

  8. Attach the other end of the second jumper cable (1) to a good engine ground (engine lift hook or generator bracket) at the discharged battery (3).

  9. Object Number: 405501 Size: MH
  10. Start the engine of the vehicle that is providing the boost (4).
  11. Start the engine of the vehicle with the discharged battery (3).
  12. Disconnect the negative jumper cable (1) from the engine ground of the battery (3) that was boosted.
  13. Remove the other end of the negative jumper cable (5) from the booster battery (4).
  14. Remove the positive jumper cable (6) from the booster battery (4).
  15. Important: Do not let the cable end touch any metal while the other cable end is still connected.

  16. Remove the positive jumper cable (2) from the other battery (3).
