Inspection Procedure

    Object Number: 71497 Size: SH
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Clean any dirt from around the differential fill plug.
  3. Remove the fill plug from the differential.
  4. Check that the differential fluid level is even with the bottom of the fill plug hole to no lower than 6 mm (0.25 in) below the opening.

  5. Object Number: 71497 Size: SH
  6. Add new fluid if necessary.
  7. •  If a small amount of fluid is needed, use synthetic axle lubricant GM P/N 12378261, or equivalent meeting GM specification 9986115.
    • If the differential fluid level is very low, use synthetic axle lubricant GM P/N 12378261, or equivalent meeting GM specification 9986115 and add enough limited-slip differential lubricant additive GM P/N 1052358, or equivalent to maintain the original ratio of 1.6 L (1.69 qt) of axle lubricant to 118 mL (4.0 oz) of limited-slip additive.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the fill plug to the differential.
  9. Tighten
Tighten the differential fill plug to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

  10. Lower the vehicle.
