Steering Column Lock Malfunction

DEFINITION: The SERVICE COLUMN LOCK message is displayed or the steering column does not LOCK or UNLOCK.

Did you perform the BCM Diagnostic System Check?

Select BCM display DTC function on the scan tool.

Does the scan tool display DTC B2587, B2588, B2592, or B2593?

Did you disconnect the steering column lock motor connector with the ignition ON?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. With a scan tool, observe the Column Lock State parameter in the BCM data list.

Does the scan tool display ENABLE STDBY?

With a scan tool, observe the Key In Ignition parameter in the BCM data list.

Does the scan tool display ACTIVE with the key IN the ignition and INACTIVE with the key OUT?

With a scan tool, observe the Key Out Ignition parameter in the BCM data list.

Does the scan tool display ACTIVE with the key OUT of the ignition and INACTIVE with the key IN?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Remove the key OUT of the ignition.
  3. With a scan tool, command the steering column to LOCK and UNLOCK.

Does the steering column LOCK and UNLOCK with each command?

System OK

  1. Disconnect the steering column lock relay.
  2. Jumper steering column lock relay terminals A2 and C1.
  3. With a scan tool, command the steering column to LOCK and UNLOCK.

Does the steering column LOCK and UNLOCK with each command?

  1. Remove the key OUT of the ignition.
  2. Reconnect the steering column lock relay.
  3. Disconnect the steering column lock motor connector.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the steering column lock drive (A) and steering column lock drive (B).
  5. With a scan tool, command the steering column to LOCK and UNLOCK.

Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with each command?

  1. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit of the steering column lock relay and the coil side feed circuit of the steering column lock relay.
  2. With a scan tool, command the steering column to LOCK and UNLOCK.

Test the control and feed circuit of the steering column lock relay for a short to ground, short to voltage, or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs

  1. Disconnect BCM fuse #25 for 15 seconds to clear the BCM steering column fail enable mode.
  2. Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
