Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
- Disconnect
the negative battery cable.
- Remove the battery heat shield. Refer to
Battery Heat Shield Replacement
in Body Front End.
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to
Cooling System Draining and Filling
in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the engine intake manifold. Refer to
Intake Manifold Replacement
in Engine Mechanical.
- Using the J 38185
, release and reposition the heater inlet and outlet hose clamps away
from the heater pipe ends.
- Separate the heater hoses from heater pipes.
- Remove the nut retaining
the heater pipe bracket to the dash panel.
- Remove the heater pipe to heater core retaining bolt.
Important: Be sure to cap or plug the open heater core to prevent contamination.
- Disconnect the heater pipe assembly from the heater core, allow any
remaining coolant to drain, discard the seal washers and cap or plug the heater
core to prevent contamination.
- Remove the heater pipe assembly from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
Tools Required
J 38185 Spring Hose
Clamp Pliers
- Remove the cap or plug
from the heater core.
- Using a lint-free clean, dry cloth, carefully clean the sealing
surfaces of the heater pipe assembly and the heater core.
- Lightly coat the new seal washers with coolant.
- Carefully slide the new seal washers onto the heater pipe assembly
until seated.
- Install the heater pipe assembly into position in the vehicle.
- Install the heater pipe assembly to the heater core.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the heater
pipe assembly retaining bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the heater pipe assembly retaining bolt to 16 N·m
(12 lb ft).
- Install the
heater pipe bracket into position.
- Install the heater pipe bracket retaining nut.
Tighten
Tighten the heater pipe bracket retaining nut to 10 N·m
(89 lb in).
- Install the heater inlet
and outlet hoses to the heater pipes.
- Using the J 38185
, position the heater hose clamps onto the heater pipe ends.
Orientate the heater hose clamps as shown.
- Install the engine intake manifold. Refer to
Intake Manifold Replacement
in Engine Mechanical.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
Tighten
Tighten the negative battery cable bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
- Install the battery heat shield. Refer to
Battery Heat Shield Replacement
in Body Front End.
- Program the transmitters. Refer to
Transmitter Programming/Synchronization
in Keyless Entry.
- Refill the cooling system. Refer to
Cooling System Draining and Filling
in Engine Cooling.
- Inspect the heater core joint for leaks.
