  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With a scan tool, attempt to establish communications with the PCM.

Does the scan tool communicate with the PCM?

Go to Step 3

Go to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check

Select PCM display DTC function on the scan tool.

Does the scan tool display DTC P0654?

Go to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check

Go to Step 4

With a scan tool, select IPC special functions and command a sweep test (minimum to maximum) on the tachometer.

Does the scan tool control the tachometer?

Go to Step 5

  1. With a scan tool, observe the RPM parameter in the IPC data list.
  2. Test drive the vehicle as needed.

Does the scan tool indicate the correct RPM?

  1. With a scan tool, observe the RPM parameter in the IPC data list and the tachometer display on the IPC.
  2. Test drive the vehicle as needed.

Does the scan tool display correspond with the tachometer display within the specified value?

500 RPM

System OK

  1. With a scan tool, observe Engine Speed parameter in the PCM data list.
  2. Test drive the vehicle as needed.

Does the scan tool indicate the correct Engine Speed?

Test the tachometer signal circuit for an open, short to voltage, or short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs

Did you find and correct the condition?

Replace the IPC assembly. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .

Did you complete the replacement?

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
