J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Removal Procedure

  1. Recover the refrigerant from the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the battery heat shield. Refer to Battery Heat Shield Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the compressor drive belt. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  4. Disconnect the compressor clutch electrical connector.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  7. Remove the compressor hose assembly retaining bolt.

  8. Object Number: 297225  Size: SH

    Important: Prior to removal, take note of the compressor hose routing and orientation between the compressor and condenser.

  9. Using a back-up wrench on the condenser fitting (2), loosen the compressor hose fitting (1) from the condenser.

  10. Object Number: 296278  Size: SH
  11. Remove the lower compressor mounting bolts.

  12. Object Number: 82073  Size: SH

    Important: Cap or tape the open compressor hose and the condenser immediately to prevent contamination.

  13. Remove the compressor hose assembly from the condenser.
  14. Discard the O-ring seal and cap or tape the compressor hose and the condenser.
  15. Lower the vehicle.

  17. Remove the compressor hose assembly to accumulator retaining bolt.
  18. Important: Cap or tape the open compressor hose and the accumulator immediately.

  19. Remove the compressor hose assembly from the accumulator, discard the O-ring seal and cap or tape the compressor hose assembly and the accumulator to prevent contamination.

  21. Remove the compressor mounting nut.
  22. Fully loosen the compressor mounting stud.
  23. Reposition the A/C compressor forward.
  24. Remove the compressor hose assembly from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 297228  Size: SH
  1. Install the compressor hose assembly into position in the vehicle.
  2. Install the compressor into position on the compressor mounting bracket.
  3. Install the compressor mounting stud to the engine block.
  4. Install the compressor mounting bolt in the upper, forward position (net locating hole).
  5. Remove the cap or tape from the compressor hose assembly and the accumulator.
  6. Install the new O-ring to the compressor hose assembly. Refer to O-Ring Replacement

  7. Object Number: 95632  Size: SH
  8. Install the compressor hose to the accumulator.
  9. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Install the compressor hose assembly to accumulator retaining bolt.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  12. Remove the cap or tape from the compressor hose assembly end (2) and the compressor (3).
  13. Install the new seal washers to the compressor hose assembly. Refer to Compressor Sealing Washers Replacement

  14. Object Number: 297232  Size: SH
  15. Raise and support the vehicle.
  16. Route the compressor hose assembly to the condenser.
  17. Remove the cap or tape from the compressor hose assembly and the condenser.
  18. Install the new O-rings to the compressor hose assembly. Refer to O-Ring Replacement

  19. Object Number: 296278  Size: SH
  20. Install the lower compressor mounting bolts.

  21. Object Number: 82073  Size: SH
  22. Install the compressor hose assembly to the condenser.
  23. Align the compressor hose assembly to the condenser.

  24. Object Number: 297225  Size: SH
  25. Using a back-up wrench on the condenser fitting (2), secure the compressor hose assembly fitting (1) to the condenser.
  26. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 24 N·m (17 lb ft).

  27. Lower the vehicle.

  28. Object Number: 296274  Size: SH
  29. Tighten the compressor mounting stud.
  30. Tighten
    Tighten the stud to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  31. Tighten the compressor mounting bolts in the following sequence:
  32. 21.1. Front upper
    21.2. Front lower
    21.3. Rear lower

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolts in sequence to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

    21.4. Install the compressor mounting nut.

    Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  33. Connect the compressor clutch electrical connector.
  34. Install the compressor drive belt. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  35. Install the battery heat shield. Refer to Battery Heat Shield Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  36. Recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  37. Leak test the fittings of the component using J 39400-A .
