Removal Procedure
- Remove the oil cooler line retainers from the frame.
- For the 4.3L with auxiliary oil cooler only, remove the oil cooler line retaining bolt from the oil filter base.
- In order to remove the retaining ring (E-clips) securing the cooler line to the quick connect fitting, be sure to use the following procedure:
- You will need a bent-tip screwdriver or equivalent in order to remove the retaining ring.
- Using the bent-tip screwdriver or equivalent, pull on one of the open ends of the retaining ring in order to rotate the retaining ring around the quick connect fitting.
- Rotate the retaining ring around the quick connect fitting until the retaining ring is out of position and can be completely removed.
- Remove the retaining ring from the quick connect fitting.
- Discard the retaining ring.
- Pull the cooler line straight out from the quick connect fitting.
- For the 4.3L without the auxiliary oil cooler, repeat steps 3 through 10 in order to remove the oil cooler lines from the oil filter base.
- For the 5.0L and the 5.7L, repeat steps 3 through 10 in order to remove the oil cooler lines from the oil filter base.
- For the 7.4L, repeat steps 3 through 10 in order to remove the oil cooler lines from the oil filter base.
- For the 6.5L diesel engine, repeat steps 3 through 10 in order to remove the oil cooler lines from the oil filter base.
- Repeat steps 3 through 10 in order to remove the oil cooler lines from the radiator.
- Repeat steps 3 through 10 in order to remove the oil cooler lines from the auxiliary oil cooler.
Pull the plastic cap back from the quick connect fitting and down along the cooler line about two inches.
Installation Procedure
- Do not reuse any of the existing retaining rings removed from the existing quick connect fittings. All retaining rings being installed must be NEW.
- Do not install the new retaining ring onto the fitting by pushing the retaining ring down over the fitting.
- Ensure the following procedures are performed when installing the new retaining rings onto the fittings.
- Install a new retaining ring (E-clip) onto each quick connect fitting using the following procedure:
- Hook one of the open ends of the retaining ring in one of the slots in the quick connect fitting.
- Rotate the retaining ring around the fitting until the retaining ring is positioned with all three ears through the three slots on the fitting.
- Ensure the three retaining ring ears can be seen from inside the fitting and the retaining ring can move freely in the fitting slots.
- Install the oil cooler line into the fitting. Pull back on the oil cooler line to ensure proper fitting.
- Install the plastic cap onto the fitting.
- Connect the oil cooler lines to the radiator. Repeat steps 1 through 6.
- Connect the oil cooler lines to the auxiliary oil cooler.
- For the 4.3L without auxiliary oil cooler, install the oil cooler lines to the oil filter base. Repeat steps 1 through 6.
- For the 5.0L and 5.7L, install the oil cooler lines to the oil filter base. Repeat steps 1 through 6.
- For the 7.4L, install the oil cooler lines to the oil filter base. Repeat steps 1 through 6.
- For the 6.5L diesel engine, install the oil cooler lines to the oil filter base. Repeat steps 1 through 6.
- For the 4.3L with auxiliary oil cooler only, install the oil cooler line retaining bolt to the oil filter base.
- Install the oil cooler line retainers to the frame.
- Verify the oil level. Fill the oil as necessary.
Important:
Tighten
Tighten the oil cooler line retaining bolt to the oil filter base to
35 N·m (26 lb ft).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Tighten
Tighten the oil cooler line retaining bolt and nut to 12 N·m
(106 lb in).
