DEFINITION: Starter Solenoid Clicks, Engine Does Not Crank

Important: Battery must be in a charged state to avoid misdiagnosis.

  1. Set the gear selector to Park.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START.
  3. Using a digital multimeter, measure the voltage from the battery positive terminal to the starter solenoid terminal B.

Is the voltage less than the specified value?

0.5 V

Go to Step 3

  1. Replace the battery positive cable. Refer to Battery Cable.

Has the replacement been made and the system rechecked?

  1. Turn the ignition switch to START.
  2. UsUsing a digital multimeter, measure the voltage from the battery negative terminal G113.

Is the voltage less than the specified value?

Less than 0.5 V

Go to Step 5

  1. Replace the battery negative cable. Refer to Ground Leads.

Has the replacement been made and the system rechecked?

Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid terminal S and the battery.

Does the starter crank?

  1. Replace the starter assembly. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.

Check for a poor connection or high resistance in the starter circuit. Repair as necessary.
